So today is my last day as an environmental engineer (never say never). I am taking early retirement and going to concentrate on my flying. If all goes well, I will be CFI by October. :happydance::happydance:

You will be amazed that you found time, in the past, to go to work.... :)

I heard that they added a new requirement for CFI checkride. You have to have trained one pilot up through his Sport Pilot checkride, and since you're not yet a CFI, you can't charge him. I know just the guy, already has his student pilot certificate.....

Congrats. Enjoy the retirement.

After 10 years of retirement, I have to agree, My days are very full. Just today I thought that I need to get to the airport but my next 3 days are full already.

Ain't that the truth. I retired in January (for the third time!) and hope to be back on the treadmill by the end of this month. I'm so busy doing nothing that I am not sure I can fit in the time for a job any more!

Congratulations. Enjoy working on all the projects you didn't have time to do when you were working for a job.

Congratulations. I've been retired for a year now but looking for something to take me through the next four or five.

Enjoy your time, John. We need more CFI's that are teaching because they want to.

Two framed cross-stitchings hang on the wall behind my good friend's desk.

From when he retired:

"The race is over. The rats won."

From when he started working again:

"Same race, different rats."

Thanks y'all.

As far as the CFI thing, I've probably wanted to be a pilot all my life. Got my PPL in 1976 and started on CPL but allowed myself to be talked out of the career. That was a very difficult time of my life and I did not think very clearly. Got involved in other things that made a lot of demands on my time, money, and attention and the flying just fell by the wayside.

Fast forward 34 years and my life was considerably different. Divorced, easy job, few demands. Boring. Finally got started again with flying and soon after decided to become much more involved with it. In my life, I had discovered that I was a very good teacher. In my careers, I had always taught and had been quite successful at it. Ex, when I was in construction, I taught trades to many folks. When I was a construction inspector, I was the guy that taught all the new inspectors. I took naturally to teaching, was good at it, and others recognized that. So deciding to pursue my CFI was a natural progression.

Anyway, that is a bit of my story. Hope to meet some more of you IRL. Thanks again for the well wishes.

So how is retirement treating you so far? :D

Technically, I am still on the clock. I am going in now to clean out my desk. Starting Monday, it should start to sink in.

Watch "About Schmidt" starring Jack Nicholson and Kathy Bates. The central theme is mediocrity. The writing and acting is absolutely brilliant. They conjured up the mediocre job, in the mediocre city, mediocre spouse, mediocre post-retirement goals, mediocre kids, etc. Take a lesson from the lead character who retires in the opening scenes and go out and break the mold. Go to "work" in a new "job" that pays the highest psychological income. What better way to do that then aviation, eh?

Congratulations!

Exactly. I will watch the movie (may have seen it years ago). I also enjoyed R. Bach's Illusions when I read it many many years ago. I believe that one has the analogy about the crab clinging to the rock in the current. "Just let go."
