find this, switch to another plane, proceed with planned flight, go home and not worry about what its gonna cost me to fix.

The bad part of renting: I had to get in the habit of looking at the "squawk rack" before every flight to see what I have in store for my flight. Things I've found before I made a habit of this is inop PPT buttons, tumbling DG, inop #2 radio, high pitch squeel in the intercom, bad headphone jacks, etc.

It had been flown twice that day with cfi, dual. cfi said it ran up fine and they had their lessons. My buddy / safety pilot said there was too much oil under plane, so we investigated.

I flew it xc the evening before and it flew just fine.

I had an engine like that. It didn't break the push rod tube, but both the tube and the rod were bent like a banana.

I don’t know, stuck valve maybe? I think the mechanic will cut the oil filter to look for metal. Maybe just have to replace one jug. 3-5 AMU? All I know is my IR lessons will be cancelled next week if another plane isn’t avail.

MMO will fix it. Add 6 ounces and fly it. Oil analysis in 25 hours and report back.....

The race car came off the track after practice running rough. We pulled a valve cover and found a broken rocker arm and bent push rod. Replaced the rocker and hammered the push rod to resemble straight, went out and finished 3rd in a 100 mile race.

Before the race we ran some MMO through the engine, then changed the oil and filter. No metal in the filter. In retrospect we should have changed the engine, but this was our spare engine.

Isn't that on the intake side? I thought it was the exhaust side that was prone to stick and bend the push rod. That engine has got to be one sick puppy!

Renting definitely has some advantages, but it also comes with its fair share of disadvantages as well. As with everything in aviation, there’s a trade off.

I don't see how this airplane could have flown. Are you sure you didn't accidentally pick up the keys to a grounded airplane?

Worst case: valve and piston met, connecting rod damaged, crank damaged, cam lobe toast, lifter bore jacked.

Best case: Loose rocker, push rod got out of capture and side loaded.

Rotax with Marvel Mystery Oil should last 10,000 hrs before showing signs of wear. 1 oz per quart of oil, two glugs per fuel tank, and a little dab behind the ear.
