Redneck handprop?

I was expecting something to go horribly wrong. Not sure why. Cool it worked though! Surprised it worked to!

I've heard of several times that aircraft have been started that way. There's a short book out called "Tail Dragger Sunset" where the author talks about starting a DC-3 this way. He said it left such horrendous marks on the spinner, he was afraid the chief mechanic was gonna bust him with the company. But, it turned out they were so grateful that he completed his haul, no one ever said anything about it.

Now, what would happen if that rope got stuck on the prop and would itself back up?

A DC-3 (well C-47) had a documented way of starting it by attaching a rope to the end of the prop blades and pulling.

Either the rope would break or the engine would quit, either way the resale value of the truck would not be affected.

I noticed a couple of things
Apparently alcohol causes a dead battery
And that diesel truck idles really rough on alcohol

I thought the diesel sounded pretty normal.

But 100% ethanol makes it a real ***** to cold start.

I seem to recall seeing a video of this being done years ago. Wish I could find it online.

Wow! That FAA one was wild. I wonder if the pilot gave the passenger any instructions at all.

I remember those movies. It was my job (since I lived next to the GADO office) to pick them up for our flying club safety meetings. They were all pretty dated back in 1981 when we were watching them.

They were "dated" in 1974 when we were watching them!
