Rand Paul & TSA

Ummm... It has nothing to do with "growing a pair." The President of the United States does not have line-item veto power.

Indeed, in their "Contract to America" the GOP, lead by then speaker Newt Gingrich, gave President Clinton the line item veto. The SCOTUS promptly struck it down, and for good reason.

I don't seem to recall anything prompt about it being struck down. Wasn't is used by President Clinton for at least one budget year?

If wiki is correct, it was signed April 9, 1996 and the SCOTUS affirmed a Feb 1998 ruling on June 25, 1998.

To be fair, that might be "prompt" in the context of our legal system.

I have been told repeatedly that for a pilot like myself, who does not have a dispatch service, the only acceptable briefings are from DUATS or FSS itself. Before LM, their lines were often busy forever.
There are several other recognized weather sources but IME TFR info isn't available from many that us independent pilots have access to.

Multiple CFIs.
There you have it. Clearly an unimpeachable source of information. :mad2:
100 CFIs can be wrong and have been on many topics/occasions. Whenever a CFI insists something is true I normally ask them to point out their reference to me. Without an official reference, anything a CFI tells you is mere opinion and holds no more weight for me than what I hear from another pilot.

Actually, I did. The question became what other source could give me up-to-date information. For example, if I print out something off the AWC leaving home, then go and prep the airplane, as much as an hour has elapsed. Weather can change dramatically in an hour, as can forecasts Now, lets say I prang the airplane bad enough to have to explain myself. I went on an hour-old printout instead of getting updated weather information. That to me suggests I did not have all the information relevant to the flight.

The CFI's who suggested this knew me and my situation. Were I to go from another source I would want a printout in the airplane, so I could prove that I had all the information relevant to the flight. Had I an internet connection in the hangar and a computer and printer, I might go that route. On the other hand, my $20 cell phone is enough to get a briefing that satisfies the regulatory requirement, doesn't require paper or toner, and works anywhere.

No one is suggesting that you shouldn't call FSS. It's just that you keep calling it a "regulatory requirement" which it is not. That only gives other people the same misconception.

Getting updated information is a regulatory requirement. Being able to prove that you have done so isn't required, but it makes pretty good sense.

Isn't it good that they don't require proof of everything and leave at least some things open ended? They could say that you need to check weather using only such and such source, within X amount of time, and keep documentation of that with you at all times during the flight and for X amount of time after.

Having found myself in difficulty once, I tend to think along the lines of how will my actions appear to an investigator? I don't think they could take exception to my being briefed directly before departing. They could if I found myself being briefed through other venues. The FAA has sanctioned pilots for less, and I have read that they've adopted a much tougher attitude of late, preferring suspensions to retraining, for example. Given their stated emphasis on safety, it would not come as a surprise that my readings had some veracity.

So I make my phone call before my flight.

Lately I've been finding it faster to call FSS for my briefings. I do use online weather sources ahead of time for planning the trip, but DUAT output throws everything but the kitchen sink in there, which makes it more likely that I will miss a relevant notam or TFR.

I've posted this elsewhere: Fltplan.com is a valid briefing source. At the end of the weather brief, there is a place to have it e-mailed to you. I do that both so I can reference it in the air and as proof of brief if ever needed. I also view the FAA TFR page and print a copy.
This is all a bit moot when one can get updated weather and TFRs in the cockpit, but I don't know how one could prove they viewed it other than taking a pic in the air.

The weather changes to much enroute on some of my flights, the preflight brief is just a good start. My on-board Radar is more current close in than Center's and with NEXRAD, I'm seeing the same thing they are. It seems to me, this also needs to be taken into consideration.

Best,

Dave

TSA has become the new poster boy for bad gov't. A gift from GWB and greatly enlarged by BHO, it is a pig and needs to be gutted.

You mean gift from Congress. Executive Branch can recommend creation, Congress keeps handing them the blank checks.

TSA could easily become an "unfunded mandate".

Credited with shutting down the government.

The POTUS has a press room, he could use it.

If the prez would rub congresses nose in their own mess the voters might -- MIGHT do something.

BUT the majority of American voters will vote for the Rep/Senator who can get the federal government to spend the most money in their district.

When the American voter realizes that they are being bought by their own money they might do some thing but I don't believe they are smart enough to see that fact.
