Swapped the Airgizmo docks out, installed the Aera. Is it a logbook entry? My Google foo finds the audience split down the middle. I didn't see an original entry in the airframe log book for the 496, but I didn't spend hours trying to read 40 years of scribbles either. Looked from 1990 and up and saw nothing.

Do you need tools to take the 560 out of the plane?

No, they are portable hand held devices and not part of the aircraft, no different than an ipad on a yoke mount.

I think the question might be, were tools required to swap the AirGizmo docks?

I'd think that's a minor modification that really should have a logbook entry.

To pull the GPS, no tools. the dock takes a Phillips head to remove.

The ones who have done it already are all over the board. No entry as its a portable, 337 or simple log book entry are what i found. I'm inclined to let my AP inspect no make an entry.

Any time you alter an airplane it must be done with care. Even "slide in replacement" radios. Even battery upgrades.

Heck software upgrades can get sticky (think TCAS, EGPWS etc)

Then there are vendor Service Bulletins that are not approved by an OEM bulletin that can render an airplane unaireorthy. Example : Vendor increased seat tracking distances but no data from aircraft manufacturer on how to properly install it in the airplane. New seats could block emergency exists.

True dat.

There are cases of airplanes being lost because a screw was too long and either interfered with flight controls or shorted something out.

Not to say swapping AirGizmo docks is likely to do that, just that stranger things have happened.

Hence the paranoia that leads to apparently draconian regs.

I'll have my MX take of it. Thanks guys.
