Property Damage by Minors

What an odd world we live in where some people would suggest that the school is responsible for not locking the doors rather than the kids who actually committed the vandalism... :nono:

Strange as it sounds, I fully agree with you. The school, and the band director have decided to be snotty about it, so snotty gets as snotty does. As soon as I had the info on the actual perps from the school and they started HELPING rather than hindering, I'd withdraw the suit against the school.

Means to an end, since the school is obstructing.

Lighten up, Francis...

Payday lending is a $46 Billion industry. That's only 3.9% (one twenty-fifth, 1/25) of all financial services ($1.26 Trillion). Financial services is 7.2% of total GDP, making payday lending 0.28% of the US economy.

Is it ugly? Yeah. Is it a problem? Maybe. Is it driving US policy decisions in any real sense? No way. You seriously want others to join your herculean leap of faith to believe that anyone who opposes a ridiculous minimum wage increase is maliciously putting a boot on the neck of poor people? Where's your concern about the government's boot on the neck of the middle class?

Anyway, like I said, lighten up, Francis.
I used a payday loan once in my life when I was 18 years old. It was the only form of credit or borrowing that I had access to and I absolutely needed to do it. I of course looked at how much it was going to cost me and made sure I wouldn't get stuck in a cycle. It was a useful tool and was better than the other problem I was going to have without the money.

It's amazing how many people are (apparently) living paycheck to paycheck.

Yeah, something like 43% of people. It's hard to have stability when you are making less than a living wage (which is the vast majority of those 43%). I was there once, but I had multiple "get out of poverty" cards (e.g. good upbringing, good genes). People with below average IQs (50% of the population) and from less successful / less supportive families have their work cut out for them. There just aren't very many good paying jobs that don't require a fair bit of brain power. We used to have good paying manufacturing jobs in this country, but now most of those are being done for 25 cents an hour in China.

Well then we should quit calling this a country that is based on Christian ideals, and realize that ISIS is correct in calling us Infidels.

Exodus 22:25
“If you lend money to any of my people with you who is poor, you shall not be like a moneylender to him, and you shall not exact interest from him.

"Payday loans" are extreme interest to the poorest of the poor, nobody uses them unless they are broke and in a bind.

No, I will never lighten up on this because "good men doing nothing" is the most evil thing there is within our species and that will end in our destruction.

Now that the parents are apparently offering restitution, I guess this is moot, but when the principal was stonewalling, it would have been interesting to hear what he said if you had asked him whether he had consulted the school district's legal counsel on whether it was a wise move to obstruct victims of vandalism from seeking restitution.

If school officials are in the habit of trying to do amateur lawyering on behalf of their employer, that's something that needs to be corrected, IMO. As taxpayers, we don't want officials exposing the public purse to unnecessary liability by choosing responses that make things worse after the fact.

When I was a union steward, one of the things I appreciated was that the union had legal counsel, so that we didn't have to guess about what was the legal way to handle things if a question came up. I think I would feel the same way about the school district's legal counsel if I were a school official.

All this time and I didn't know Hennings name was Francis, that explains a lot.

Wow... only one phone was involved in this destruction? And only two perps?

You should be having the SRO go full bore on the parents (probably one parent per perp), and let the vandals wash police cars for six months when they get out of juvy.

Think of all of the service industry jobs out there. Retail, healthcare, lawncare, auto detailing, temp agency work, daycare, and a dozen more similar jobs which pay <$10/hr, even in a major market like Atlanta.

Unless someone is healthy, childless, lives frugally, has a great work ethic and a plan, they are not going to escape that kind of job and the lifestyle it brings.

And how did they end up in those jobs? Perhaps they were ESL kids or are from a family that didn't value education or work ethic? Sure, we can say they missed their opportunity in High School or made bad choices, but ultimately, it doesn't matter. That segment of the populace exists and I have no idea of how to improve their lot in life.

52% of Boomers, who are knocking on retirement's door, have less than $100K in savings. Has nothing to do with their jobs or opportunities. It's just being irresponsible.

It was a prank, which became malicious mischief withe the destruction of property, probably not intentional, but nonetheless. The "perps" most not be rotten to he core, because apparently nothing was stolen.

My recommendation, make it a teaching moment. Meet with the kids, ask a police officer to be present to help drive home the point why this stuff is a bad idea. Get to know them a little and decide if they are redeemable, just good kids who had a bad idea, or if they are truly bound for Juvie. Ask them what they think would make it right. If the money isn't important to you, and you don't want their help, maybe they can do 60 hours volunteering at a nursing home or some other community service.

Ever think? maybe they have retirement systems that do not depend upon savings?

Holy crap. I'm not sure how to even respond to this. That's not the road I want him going down in life. He gets good grades, has good friends, doesn't get into trouble, enjoys the marching band....let him enjoy being a kid, not being a thug.

The other kid is the thug, standing up for yourself is a good trait to have, regardless of what year it is.

Here ya go

How many of them lost it due to corporate restructuring so and stock market collapses?:dunno: The only ones that still have a good deal are the ones with government pensions.

Savings is dead money, drawing less in interest than inflation rate. plus pay the taxes on the interest income

Savings = some kind of investment portfolio, not literally a "savings account".

No, because that was included in the figure. By "savings" I didn't mean a "savings account" I meant what access Boomers have to assets.

For those who don't recognize the hobby horse being ridden here, I invite them to the Spin Zone to hear Henning hold forth about ALL about the evil "European Families" (WINK! WINK!) that control all the money ever created, and the panacea that is Islamic banking (where interest is forbidden unless we call it anything other than interest) which will propel economies to first world status -- just like it has done for all the Islamic nations everywhere (especially the ones that aren't sitting on seas of oil).

Propelling an economy on a Ponzi scheme is a dangerous thing since you have to have wars to maintain it or it collapses.

:confused::confused: Amazing? It's how our economy is designed, it makes the financial industry a bunch of money in the "payday loan" business. Why do you think there is such a fight against raising the minimum wage?

It is all about choices. Many people live beyond their means at all income levels and finance the difference with debt. Others avoid debt and live more modestly but have better financial security.

Some people aren't smart enough to know the difference though and are preyed upon by the industry.

I don't think it's as bad now as it was back before the '07 crash though. I was involved in an HVAC business in the early 2000s. I was always amazed at how many people had to take out a loan to pay for new AC when their's died. They had a nice house...two nice new cars...a big screen TV on the wall...all the toys for their weekend entertainment (jet skis, etc). And yet, they couldn't come up with a measly $5k for a new condensing unit. Zero money in the bank. Living on loans and credit cards.

Of course, this is back when the banks were making home loans to dead people to feed the mortgage backed securities sector. Another of Henning's Ponzi schemes that collapsed bringing down the entire economy with it.

I received a call from the SRO saying that she had contacted both parents and passed along my information. A few minutes later the first parent called. Very stern, and said she's on disability and can pay for half the phone, but only if I take monthly payments for 18 months. She just left a bad impression.

Then the dad of the second kid called. I bet he apologized ten times during the call, and each time thanked me for not pressing charges. He said he was sorry it took so long but he was at work and had to wait until his break. He said it would take him 2 weeks, when he gets paid again, but he'd have the cash for me if I could wait that long. Then he was telling me how his son is a good kid and it was out of character for him and I can be assured something like that will never happen again. "Oh man, I'm rambling. I'm sorry, I know you're busy." I felt bad for the guy.

I'm just glad to put this behind me.

Sounds like you are handling this well. Kids do stupid things, sounds like both the parents are owning up, but coming up with the money is not an easy thing for them. The only suggestion I have is to go with your conscience and do what you feel is fair. Sometimes forgiving and forgetting is a good option, but I don't blame you for being POd and if you want the money then you should get it.

Indeed

I know many use debt as a tool, I've just never done it, financed a couple cars, paid them off within a year, as of now I have zero debt and own everything free and clear, monthly expenses are low enough I could rent out the guest house and cover everything, of course I like my privacy and going out to dinner, feeding my plane at 15GPH, and all the other stuff I do for fun adds up a little :D

The stress of a rent to own life, being dependent upon ones job to be able to keep everything they "own", plus with how many of that demographic..as flight club put it, "are their fracking khakis", it must be a tremendous amount of stress.

It becomes more difficult when you're a single parent working at WalMart or McDonalds. You may say "That's a choice" as well, but that doesn't change the reality that there's one more kid that will grow up angry at an oppressive society.

So let's just bribe off all the world who are poorer than us, Comrade. So they won't be "angry". "Spread the wealth around," as I think someone in the news once said to a plumber.

The poorest person in America is top 10% wealthy in the world. How angry do you think America's "poor" will be when their quality of life gets busted down to slums of Bangalore or worse?

Wealth is worthless, spread around the necessary resources, take care of each other, be kind, make sure everybody has food, water, and shelter, not just in the U.S., everywhere. For less than the cost of prosecuting these wars it could be done and raise the global productivity several fold. That we allow there to exist the conditions as they are in Bangalore while our markets profit from that misery is why we are under attack by Islam. That we permit that and send our children to war to make sure we can maintain that is why we are evil. That we don't even realize or admit to our failings is why we will go extinct. That we don't see any of this as related is why we are so stupid we must, and will, die.

I'm pretty sure that is not the reason why me must and will die!

Sadly, yes it is, because we just can't understand there is no "Them" to humanity, only "Us", and that we must care for all of "Us" for us to continue. Stupidity is why the majority follow the greedy, stupidity is why the greedy will lead us to our graves. It's a design feature.

If you could magically eliminate all those causes, it would still be true that we must and will die.

At least, that's the way it's worked out so far.

As individuals we will always die, as a species whether to die or evolve is our choice, that's the nature of free will.
