Project Took Five Years

Good job Ben - can you tell me what "Full Professor" means? Is that the official term for getting "tenured" as a professor?

In academia there are "ranks," but it isn't anything like in the military. As you go up the ranks--Instructor, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, then finally Professor--your responsibilities and pay increases. Although it might be fun if it were true, I can't "order" an Assistant Professor to bring me a Cappuccino. The rank is mostly a reflection of teaching experience and demonstrated effectiveness. For the school where I teach, I had to have a major assessment project for each jump up. The numbers are part of what the Board reviews for your promotion. I also had to demonstrate continued excellence in my field (which I did by outlining concerts, CDs, and student placement in great music schools and conservatories).

Tenure is a separate matter. It supposedly guarantees that you cannot be fired; but there are many ways you could still be fired.

I'm reluctant to boast of any accomplishments, but I do like it when I read here when posters are able to fly more.

So I guess it is OK if I mention that with my promotion to full Professor this past week, I'll be able to fly a bit more!

Boast away. And congratulations!
