A small plane crashed early this morning with 2 fatalities,at Tampa executive airport central Florida. Area was reporting IFR at that time.

Both TPA and tampa executive had 10 mile visibility all morning under a 800 broken roughly.

From this (stolen from a BT post) it looks like he never got into the clouds. Not sure what he was trying to do, but whatever happened, he didn’t have much time to do it.

"Plane Down"... how about a little context in the subject line other than just a vague comment like that?

All the symptoms of lack of engine power (and plane maybe still dirty); looks like he was trying to make runway 18.
I was thinking this also but the data looks a little odd for that. He starts his turn at 75 to 100 feet before reaching a max altitude at around 225 feet and then makes the turn much more aggressively. I suppose he could have made a very low turn on course and had an engine failure after that. The data could also fit a panicked return to airport after a door pops open or some other explanation. Plenty of people have driven perfectly good planes into the ground trying to make a turn back just for a door. Could also have just been an accelerated stall from low level antics gone wrong.

I hope it’s not engine failure, there have been more fatal accidents from engine failures in the last years than I like to hear about…

What bothers me about that flight track is the immediate turn after lift-off.

They gain some altitude while turning, then the altitude starts decreasing and the airspeed increases a bit as the track straightens out.

Don't know how control locks are implemented in this aircraft, but that's my WAG right now, that some (if not all) controls were locked.

Been raining a lot all week. Hope it’s not water in the tanks.

Weather was a little strange in Tampa area yesterday. Usually severe clear early in the morning, and clouds build rapidly after 10am. However, sometimes when humidity is high there will be a collection of low clouds from overnight precip that burns off as soon as the sun hits it. Very localized. That was the case the last 2 days. Zulu time puts this accident right after dawn. Could be spatial D.

I was preparing to fly around that time and it was overcast at 200 at nearby Zephyrhills. Flew the day before same thing. Had to wait for hours until around 10am for the ceiling to raise up to at least 400ft.

For SD you generally see a rapid descent and increase in speed.

Unfortunate media miscommunication however. Looks like the pilot had a medical certificate issued for a one year time frame and then, instead of renewing, he went to BasicMed. The Tampa news quotes this aviation expert as saying he went to BasicMed because he attempted to renew his medical and was rejected by the FAA... Sigh.

And who is Bob Katz? For a supposed aviation expert, he appears to not understand how BasicMed works, stating flatly that the pilot was under BM because his medical was rejected when likely he was approved with a 1 year SI and just chose BM.

The number of people that don't understand it is large. And may include me, on some bits of it.

Spinal Surgeon I would think he knows medicine. Like to know time in make model?
Flew in a buddy’s Lancair IV. Approach speeds were high. It definitely felt like a
hot airplane.

I was about 5 miles from KVDF this morning just after 8 a.m. in Mango.
Scattered clouds, looked to be well above 1k but I'm not great at that estimation. Vis looked to be well over a few miles.
We'd had some light fog early in the am earlier this week but it had burned off right after sunrise.

There's only one point on that flight path that sticks out to me. 92mph maybe 75 feet off the ground (based on the -75 on the previous point) halfway down the runway in a lanceair? None of the other points on that path should have ever happened. Heck even that point shouldn't have happened. Should have been an abort before that.
