We need a thread of places you can scrub off your list of fields to stop at if at all possible ...

My first vote is Hope, Arkansas M18

We stopped there on the way back from OSH and good lord was it hot and depressing. It stunk too. The Avgas machine faces the sun so you cannot read the LED readout at all. I just got lucky and punched the right buttons somehow ... and don't deviate too much from the pavement or you'll hit a hay bale or a land mine. :yikes:

Years ago, we landed there to wait out thunderstorms. True to Clinton's legacy, we discovered a young couple having sex on the FBO couch when we entered the building. They refused our request for a ride to town...

Any unfamiliar non occupied airport during the weekend or holiday. Always call or radio to verify someone will be there and what services you might expect. I had to learn this the hard way no less than 3 times. I got lucky each time but only larger airports with an operating fbo for me on the weekend.

I should have said we were in Hope on a Sunday, but I dont' think it would have mattered much.

If a guy works there, he could figure out the avgas machine faster maybe because I'm not exaggerating you cannot read it at all. The LED display is completely burned out by the sun.

Sunday's are a particullary bad day to fly x-country. I avoid it if possible.

Were they related?

Ahoskie, NC (ASJ). Fuel is not self serve and the owner only works at the FBO when he feels like it -no set hours.

Shoulda requested to ride them......silly outa towners.

KBKD (Breckinridge TX)

It has an air conditioned crapper and self serve fuel, but that's it. I only land there on the way to the panhandle when the winds are bad because it has multiple runways and it's about half way for me.

Otherwise, don't bother. :nonod:

KINK. The old man at the FBO is insulting, rude, and arrogant. If you call on the unicom or call ahead you won't get an answer. There is no fuel there even though airnav advertises it.

KINK (Kermit TX)

Just wanted to commit that one to the memory banks ...

Looks like Monahans E01 is the closest alternate. Maybe you or someone knows if it's any good. :dunno:

Can't say I've cum :wink2: up on that ever at a field. An airfield that is...

Only similar story I have is, I hand propped a Cessna for an older guy one Sunday who acted like he needed to get himself and the younger woman who was with him somewhere else real bad. ;)

Just wanted to bold it so it'll stick in the brain maybe.

Looks like it serves Aulander NC.

EDE would be a better alternate for us noseless flyers maybe with two strips on it. :dunno:

Harrisburg, KMDT

Stopped in about 1 AM after a weather diversion and wanted to run out for a snack someplace. Figured at the odd hours we'd have better luck at a big airport.

"We only give crew cars to jets"

"How many crew cars do you have?"

"Three"

"How many are out?"

"None"

"Do you have any inbounds expected in the next hour?"

"No"

"So you are concerned that, at 1am, you are going to have three unscheduled jets, all with crews who want cars immediately, drop in before we get back from the nearest 24 hour drive through?"

I was then asked for a credit card to pay a ramp fee. The line guy didn't know what the fee was, but he'd be happy to write down my credit card number so the day staff could charge it! Needless to say, I wrote down a phone number instead.

Little lesson for FBOs--those of use who fly in with a Cherokee one day may be in with a King Air or a Gulfstream the next. My job included fuel planning for a corporate flight department at the time; needless to say, we tankered through MDT for a while.

Crazy.

Big airport FBO's can be greedy snobs who don't like Cessna's.

I never think to write up the bad stops, usually post the good ones on air nav. Unfortunately the bad ones don't get posted on air nav.

I like flying cross country on Sundays, with or without apostrophes, because I can go right through the MOAs.

Sunday's are not taboo, but I like to pack a lunch if I'm trying to fly four or five hours or more. The food situation on Sundays can be limited.

I've found I like flying like I'm 'glamping' x-country. We can land anywhere and have good food and like a picnic if we carry a cooler with some good sandwiches and stuff. We take our time, and if we get hungry, we land and take a break.

I always try to get radar service when I'm attempting a long leg through a MOA(s). So I should be covered there ... maybe ..

E11, Andrews, TX would be a good alternate to KINK. Just north of Midland-Odessa. Multiple runways, good condition. Cheap gas - self serve, nice little FBO building. Had a courtesy car 12-18 mo ago when we had to stay overnight for weather. Our regular fuel stop when flying east.

You asked them while they were in the act?

Ditto for very early mornings on any day, plus the ride is cool and smooth in the summer and radio is quiet. Early bird gets a better flight.

I can recommend KEDE. Very accomodating, self serve gas, 2 crew cars, long runway. The Edenton is a 5 min. drive but worth it.

KRUE Russellville would have been a much better choice for your stop. Has been recognized as Arkansas Airport of the Year in the past. Manned every day except some holidays. Choice of full or self serve during business hours. Nice terminal accessible around the clock with clean restrooms. 5100x75 runway (construction in progress -soon to be 5500+).

Are you saying that "we" don't post negative comments or that AirNav "deletes" negative comments?

I just revised a 'planned but not flown' .fpl file to take one airport out and put KEDE in.

These kind of discussions are just one of the benefits of this community.

That was one of my fuel stops flying pipeline.

I flew into Williamston to visit relatives in Windsor. I thought about Edenton, but it was a little further drive. Williamston is a pretty small airport, but the people are friendly and the gas was very reasonable.

and it has one of the best warbird restoration facilities in the country on field. ezell aviation. you never know whats in the shop at any given time. they are the ones that rebuilt the red bull P-38.

Are you saying that "we" don't post negative comments or that AirNav "deletes" negative comments?

Mike, there is an FBO nearby that got so many negative comments from pilots that the manager now no longer accepts comments. I didn't realize before seeing this that Air Nav can let FBO's not allow comments.

Meaning they do not allow sex on the FBO couch??

"we're not open for the no-sexo's just yet"

We watched that old movie again recently and the one-liners kill me every time.

"Simon the fag, this is Carol. Carol, meet Simon the fag ... "

Well, you can let yourself into the building at night and no one else is there. However, the security cameras are on the internet. You could become a porn star!! Could maybe make some wordplay on the differences between going viral, virility, and unwanted viruses.

As was mentioned, E11 Andrews TX is a good nearby alternative.

But avoid KMDD Midland TX Airpark, which is also nearby. If you aren't fueling a jet, the FBO will not lift a finger to help you in any way. I go there about twice a year because family lives near the field, and I hate it every time. Once I got stuck in a pothole on the ramp, right in front of the line guys. I was on my own to extricate my plane, while they watched.

Chances are any chick that will get it on at a deserted FBO I don't want to see anyway ...

T15 Marlin Texas.

I stopped in there one day. Once. There's nothing there.

I can officially second that as I have experienced it first hand. There was fuel there, though, and now they have a credit card machine so you can try and avoid contact with him.

Stop at Odessa. Wildcatter Aviation is very nice.

Yep. I've posted factual statements about bad service only to be contacted by FBO people directly requesting their removal. I refused, so they then badgered Airnav into removing my comments.
