Yeh! Yeh! I've never done "Pirates;" but I've done "HMS Pinafore" with three different companies; "Trial By Jury" with one; and "Princess Ida" with one.
"For he izzzzz an English mannnnnn."

We did Pirates my Freshman year in high school. I played in the orchestra. Fun show. Trial By Jury shortly after graduating from college. I sang Council for the Plaintif in that one. Nasty tenor part for a baritone. :D

Great music! The 3rd time I did "Pinafore"(traditionally in the tenor section), I was Carpenter's Mate(or someone - it's been a lot of years). After a while the music director said that to balance the voices in "Glee Trio," 'Jerry, you switch voice parts(only) with "Bosn's(sp) Mate." OK; so out there in the audience are all those blue hairs who can lip-sync every word -- and you know they exist -- wondering, "Now what? What the heck is that chorus tenor doing singing that (traditionally) low range part?"

Years earlier I was -- I can't remember -- in "Princess Ida." A couple weeks before production the friend playing "Arac" was sent by Bath Iron Works to Ingall's Shipbuilding in Pascagoula(sp), MS to consult on the ship which BIW was the lead contractor. Fred couldn't get out of it. The managing director switched me to the "Arac" role: tenor to lower baritone/upper bass range.
When the review hit the paper we laughed our ***** off.
"Particularly in tune with the times were the three doltish sons of King Gama, lead by the ponderous bass of Jerry Crute." A Lead in the show and in other choruses/chorales and G & S shows with whom I had appeared said, "Ponderous bass? How many years have you been in the tenor sections with me?"

I guess it's all in how one places the tones, eh?
