Pilot texting on take-off - Made the news

What about all of the phones in bags, back packs and pockets that weren't turned off as instructed? Those are emitting tons of traffic, constantly. This happens on every flight. We haven't lost one yet. Won't. It's a dumb rule.

"...Tillman, a Charlotte patent attorney..."

Ah, I see it now. Too many stupid add and photo breaks reading it on my phone. I thought the article ended about halfway before it did.....they REALLY miked the story.

Just another ambulance chaser looking for a quick settlement.

Ridiculous, not a lawyer I would be hiring.

I may or may not have been seated next to an airline pilot on a recent flight and the both of us may or may not have been texting all the way until we both lost signal.

headline really should read:
Pilot, WHO WAS NOT FLYING BUT WAS A ****ING PASSENGER, was caught texting but a ****ING LOSER LAWYER who most likely has no clients.

so annoying that I even read that sht.

It's time the industry and the FAA come clean. The banning of electronic devices during takeoff has nothing to do with interference. It's to get the passengers attention during the safety briefing.

The only thing I've ever seen a phone interfere with is the magnetic compass and if you're taking off using just that as your sole reference you're already fuked because you're an idiot. (Not aimed at you just in general)

I was climbing through 11,000 coming out of Albuquerque when my mom called me. We were talking when departure gave me a vector towards course line. My mom asked me who I was talking to, and I told her I was talking to departure control.

She told me to hang up and fly, then call after I land...

The pilot is a dumba**. Not because he did anything to endanger any lives. He knows those are the rules and should expect there are plenty of a-holes willing to whip out their phone during take off to take a picture of him using his phone during take off and cry foul. Just ridiculous all around.

The phones don't do a thing. If they did, every terrorist would have one.

If the picture of the pilot was taken during the takeoff roll when using any electronic device is not allowed, then the photo was not obtained legally and thus is inadmissible and will be struck from evidence. There, problem solved. :)

These days, using a small electronic device on the takeoff roll on any domestic carrier I've been on lately is permitted. It's the cellular part that isn't. So the "lawyer" was following the rules...but is still a total dick.

United's policy for example:
What are the requirements for stowing or securing electronic devices during takeoff and landing?
Small, lightweight devices must be held in the passenger’s hands, placed in the seatback pocket or stowed. Larger electronic devices, like laptops, must still be stored securely in an overhead bin or another approved stowage area during takeoff and landing.

American's policy (I think this was the airline)
Please keep these things in mind during taxi, takeoff and landing:

Put small devices in airplane mode and either hold or place the device under your seat
Laptops and other large items cannot be held and should be turned off and put away

I would like him to cite the FAA rule preventing the use of cell phones in flight.

If the aircraft had wifi he could have been using that for texting

Instead of questioning the pilot like a real man he chose to break the rule himself and videotape it like a coward, then write a letter to the CEO. That kid is probably at risk for loosing his job that he invested so much time and money into. Yeah he shouldn't have been texting. But is it really that big of deal that he had to go and blast him on the news? Just straight up tell him that doing that is just like a cop speeding off-duty. Need to set the example.

Depends on the airline but most don't turn the WiFi signal on until around 10,000 feet.

I may or may not have been on that flight, or similar flights. I also was texting/sending emails, but I may not have. I drink a lot so reality is vague to me...

In our next story, movie theater patron sneaks a candy bar into the movie.

Pre-cisely....

Can the lawyer be set to airplane mode as well?
