Pet Peeves

Door-to-door school bus service.

I thought our society was interested in fuel economy? Why then do school buses stop every other house on main roads?
This.

The bus stops about every 100ft on the road I live on. :mad2:

People that spam their friends/family with conspiracy theories that any grade school child could debunk with 2 minutes on google.

Or almost as bad: people that spam forums with the same.

:mad3:

People that complain "they can't lose weight" well I tell you what, put down the Pop and the chocolate (even the dark variety). Quit eating that Ramen Noodles junk and EXERCISE. Geez it's not that hard. I'm 30# overweight but I'm trying to do something about it but cutting back. I tried cutting pop out cold turkey and got a killer headache so I'll try that again on Friday when I can be in agony on Saturday. :)

People who don't realize that their situation is simply a sample size of one and not necessarily applicable broadly.

Adding two servings a day of fruits and vegetables from what they previously ate was shown to result in a three-pound weight loss four years later. Cutting down 16 ounces daily of sugary beverages also was linked a three-pound deduction in the same period of time.

I watched as organized crime, er, the government built 19 casinos in Iowa. NINETEEN.

Remember, Iowa has fewer people than the City of Houston. So sad.

No government, organized crime the regular way, government just took the payoffs. I agree though, the proliferation of casinos has had a major negative effect on our economy. When we had Vegas and AC the average person had to go take a vacation to lose all their money, now they can blow every paycheck. In St Louis it's really hurt the local economy. I grew up at used car lot in a middle class mixed blue and white collar neighborhood and we would stock mostly 2-5 year old cars of higher caliber with the occasional Vette & BMW... As well as some stuff 'on the back lot' between $300 and $1500 for someone that needs a cheap car for their kid's first, or something cheap to get them to work till the get a couple paychecks and get something better. When the casino opened up 2miles away, business has dropped and the value of the cars being sought for has reversed the inventory demands.

When Kublai Khan had trouble collecting taxes in the south of China he sent Marco Polo down to see what could be done. He saw all the people hanging around playing and gambling on games, so he opened a casino. problem solved.

Casinos fall into the category of, "Life is hard. It's harder if you're stupid." The big debate is always, "Should society protect the stupid, even after affording them an education that included just enough math to know they're being duped?"

To keep the 6 year old kids from getting flattened by traffic, while walking to the bus stop. Is it REALLY worth it to risk dozens of kids' lives for "fuel economy?"

Yep, fuel is a finite resource, kids are an infinite resource, they're like Doritos, crunch all you want, we'll make more. If they can't figure out how to walk a half a block from the bus stop to home by 6, they're too stupid to live anyway.

um, then what is the point of the 4' wide cement thing?....could that be a sidewalk?

A lot of traffic driving on the sidewalk?

I was thinking almost the same exact thing while puttering through a school zone this morning.

Why have a 20mph school zone? The kids get driven to school by the school bus or parents. Nobody is out walking to get smushed anyway.

The sidewalk is winter population control. It's for snow shoveling by couch potato's to cause heart attacks.

I'm peeved by this one also... but how about those wordless diagrams taking the place of any language at all?? And those photo menus at Mc Donald's so people can just point at what they want?? :rolleyes2:

Student pilots that think they should've soloed after flying for 3 months inconsistently. Yeah student pilots it's helpful to fly at least once a week not once and then "go on vacation for a week or two" and then expect to remember how to do it. Yeah I know your on a budget please. Either fly or vacation. OH you want to be able to fly to your destination next year? Well good luck with that. (Cranky mood with a friend who complains that she's not getting it - sleep/eat flying. Cut the vacations out or don't complain about the costs!) Wonder if she realizes that flying into Gettysburg (her vacation spot of choice is a 3 hour flight one way and would cost about $600 when she can drive it and save about 1/2):mad2:

When did baby carriages/strollers get as big as small cars. And why do the parents think the infant will get anything out of the art museum because they pushed the machine up to block half of the window. They should have to be checked.

I guess you never travel anywhere huh? When you are in another country where you don't know language much less the alphabet you find those things pretty danged nice.

Can anyone tell me what the official language of the US is?

You don't have any experience with six year olds, do you?

Some of them get distracted very easily, and may or may not follow your rule that they must remain on the sidewalk. Does that mean they deserve to die so you can get to your destination a few minutes faster?

The tradeoff of safety for convenience should be a no-brainer. No time for that preflight? Well, then, just plow off and hope the truck put fuel in your aircraft like he was supposed to (and that it was the correct fuel).

Flying rage. I was landing at Bend, OR Airport a while back ( KBDN ) and as I anounced on a left base for runway 16 a helicopter announced a right base for 16 . The helicopters use right traffic there, so I extended a little and was following the helicopter down on final. The problem started when he stopped and hovered over the number 16. He left me with no place to go, and so I had to make a go around to the left. It seemed he did this just to make me do the go around and show me that he had the runway possession. I didn't think it showed very good sharing of the runway with others. I was close behind him but had he continued on down the runway there would of been no problem.

Not every child waiting for a school bus is 6 years old.

btw - If a child cannot be trusted to stay on the sidewalk while walking to the school bus stop, why do you believe that the child can be trusted to stay on the sidewalk right outside the house? What about the child that lives close enough to school that walk and don't qualify for a school bus.

Oh, I've thought about that.

Yes, there are children older than 6 waiting for the bus. The older ones are not a concern. The issue is that SOME of them are as young as 6, and cannot be trusted to think past the moment about the consequences of chasing their bouncing superball into the street, or somesuch.

Children are guaranteed to be on the street at a specific time -- and in much larger numbers than usual -- when a school bus pulls up. They may or may not be there at other times.

You might want to think about the excess risk just a little bit. It is not the same as other times, and it is not the same as knowing only older children are there. Like it or not, there is indeed excess risk driving down a major street just as the school bus is making the rounds.

And if it really bothers you, you can think for 10 seconds and, perhaps, find a different route or especially time. If you can't, you owe it to everyone on the road to take a Zen approach, as the only thing you'll accomplish otherwise is to increase your risk colliding with someone or something.

You thought about it? I doubt that.

tell you what, let me know when you want to think about the questions I asked:

If a child cannot be trusted to stay on the sidewalk while walking to the school bus stop, why do you believe that the child can be trusted to stay on the sidewalk right outside the house?

What about the child that lives close enough to school that walk and don't qualify for a school bus.

and while you are at it, why don't you think about what are the parent's responsibilities.

You claim that the door-to-door service is because some of the children can't be trusted. By your reasoning, such as it is, every child should get door-to-door service and every road that at child is on should be a 20mph zone. Or do you believe that some children somehow rate more protection than others?

No turn on red signs.

Here in taxachusetts, almost every traffic light has a No Turn on Red.

OK, I understand now. Bob Noel thinks in black and white and doesn't understand excess risk. Things in that wonderful little world are either risky, or they aren't.

Well, let's look at it. When I went to school, we all walked up to about a quarter mile to get to the bus stop except the kindergarteners who would may out at about half that. The only time I recall hearing about a run over kid was back in IIRC 1973 when we had year round Daylight savings time and some drunk ran over a kid already at the bus stop. That put an end to year round DST which I would prefer. My question is how many children since then have been run over on their walk to the bus stop that the cost benefit analysis turned to the benefit to stopping at each house?

There is another more subtle factor at play here though and that is in the learning of how to deal with risk. Primacy is the key in education, what you learn first sticks the hardest. What are we teaching the kids about risk management when we do this? We teach them that risk management and their safety is someone else's responsibility. In the end this leads to a less safe society.

Actually, it's apparent you don't understand.

In another thread I keep trying to get a certain poster to acknowledge the concept of risk mitigation, reducing risk impacts or probabilities to an acceptable level.

The things you seem to keep missing are (1) my pet peeve was not about the door-to-door service for the 6 year old child but all school bus stops (a 14 year old needs door-to-door bus service?) and (2) your excuse fails to consider the risk mitigation for other children.

From that article:

Older drivers have been involved in other tragedies. In 2003, an 86-year-old man mistakenly stepped on the gas pedal of his car instead of the brake and then panicked, plowing into an open-air market in Santa Monica. Ten people were killed and 63 injured.

Stupid drunk 19 year olds kill more innocent bystanders every weekend.

There is such a long history of it South Park did an episode on it.

Intermittent, hard-to-diagnose mechanical problems.

One of our two hotel courtesy vehicles has been down for the last three weeks, due to an intermittent stalling (and then failing to restart) problem.

My mechanic THOUGHT he had found the problem -- the electric fuel pump in the gas tank. Then the straps holding the gas tank had corroded away and had to be replaced, and all the rubber hoses and fittings were dry-rotted and had to go.

After replacing all that...it stalled the very next day. He finally took it home and drove it every day for three weeks until it finally failed on him, and he was able to diagnose and replace the module in the distributor that was occasionally not allowing spark to pass.

$650 later, the van is back at the airport, in time for the onslaught of Labor Day weekend fly-in guests. What an ordeal....for us AND our guests who got stranded when the danged thing would die!

It peeves me that now we're 'offended'.

Peeves peeve me. Y'all complain too much, quit you bitching and enjoy what you have.

Hooray for Henning!! :D:wink2: It's not like we have a shortage of people, after all. Nature usually provides an effective way to thin the herd and improve the species if we don't subvert her.

Where we messed up the population was with medicine. The population did not really see a rise until the small pox vaccine and then reached for the sky with penicillin. Now it's out of control and we're running out of clean water.

Penicillin peeves me. Stupid penicillin. Maybe we could offset it with more wars? Outlaw seatbelts maybe? I know...encourage drunk driving!

And flying. Mix up a dry speedball to load on top of your preflight bong hit and off you go...
