In what has got to be the dumbest I can remember Penn State (after willingly accepting all of the NCAA sanctions) is now suing the NCAA because the sanctions are too tough. :mad2:

Seriously? This is why Penn State should have been given the "death penalty" for their entire sports program for a minimum of 10 years. They just don't get it, and they never will.

It is all about money, and the PS power brokers are pulling strings to get the sanctions over turned. :nono:

Unbelievable.

I have absolutely the opposite opinion.

Good for Penn State.

In July, the NCAA issued unprecedented penalties, including a four-year postseason ban, a $60 million fine, 40 scholarship reductions and the requirement that the university to vacate all wins from 1998 to 2011.

College football generates a ton of money for other athletic programs at the school and facilitates scholarships. This won't just affect the football team, it affects all of the sports programs, scholarships and has a large impact on a public university.

This was investigated by the FBI and criminal charges have been brought against those responsible.

i though they were sueing so that all of the money in the sandusky relief fund or whatever it is is used in Pennsylvania instead of just 25% as currently stipulated

Even though 6 months ago the governor welcomed the sanctions?
Even though he made the announcement after the football season so football would not be disrupted?
Even though they still play the regular season?

They should shut down the whole school IMHO. Anyone with a degree from Penn State in the last 10 years should have it nullified.

What a bunch of sick bastards.

A job in Las Vegas FSDO beckons you.

Read the article.

i tried. at first i thought i was reading something from my hometown paper written by the high school journalism students. then i realized it was USA Today.

The situation at Penn State was a criminal matter and not a sports ethics matter.

Those involved - deserve criminal charges

Those not involved - don't deserve NCAA sanctions

I understand there may have been a foul culture in the top sports management and university management that allowed this to happen. But those guys got investigated by the FBI and they are all either fired or fired and charged with a crime. What good are NCAA sanctions going to do, after the fact?

In reading the article - the NCAA is sending 25% of the fine back to the state of PA and keeping the rest of the $60 million saying "An NCAA task force is deciding how it should be spent." Sounds like they were trying to cash in to me.

what the sanctions do is punish the institution and the culture that allowed the criminals to flourish.

Edit: The fine and such should not go to the NCAA itself, but to a trust organization. The NCAA shouldn't profit by this (NOBODY should profit from this).

What the fine does is give leeches more money to waste. NCAA is ALL about money.

The institution made billions during the time of the criminals in power. Now even the govener is all about money.

And again, not one words about the victims who were raped, allowed to be raped, while adults looked the other way.

Get your facts straight, folks -- Penn State (officially, "The Pennsylvania State University") is not suing the NCAA; Governor Tom Corbett is doing so on behalf of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Go to http://www.statecollege.com/news/lo...-ncaa-and-the-alleged-abuse-of-power-1213205/ to read the actual filing of Commonwealth v. NCAA (or in long-hand, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Thomas W. Corbett, Jr., Governor v. National Collegiate Athletic Association). And to my knowledge, the Governor's office never signed off on the sanctions imposed by the NCAA and agreed to by Penn State.

So... the federal investigation, government that runs the school and courts didn't?

Seems to me like this was thoroughly investigated, everyone involved was punished in criminal court to the full extent of the law or fired if there was not enough evidence to convict them. Does that not send a strong enough signal that this will not be tolerated?

Who does the 60 million dollar fine, scholarship restrictions and post-season ban punish? I see only university students + faculty and not administrators who were involved in this case. They're all gone.

the lawsuit filing is here:

Basically, the governor seems to be miffed that the sanctions aren't painless. They hurt his economy, so he wants an injunction to prevent the enforcement of the sanctions.

In my opinion the NCAA should respond by canceling the sanctions and imposing harsher ones. The crimes that were covered up by the university were that bad.

Never let facts get in the way of umbrage on an Internet board. :rolleyes2:

Cheers

There are some cases where a sports organization taking action against players over conflicts with the law makes sense. Like an NFL player getting a DUI. He can afford to pay the fine and hire a driver after he loses his drivers license. A league suspension or fine might be appropriate to remind him he is a role model and should behave.

But in this case the admins responsible are either no longer at the university or in jail, and the punishment is mis-directed. The NCAA is trying to throw its weight around and 'make an example' out of Penn State. But they're batting clean up behind an FBI investigation, criminal prosecution with years of jail time, and a state investigation + administrative purge.

I don't believe everyone who may have been morally involved suffered criminal sanctions. Beyond the folks with a clear legal duty to act, I'm certain there were those who were aware that something wasn't right and yet did nothing, out of misguided respect or admiration for "the program".

It's not just about getting rid of the perpetrators of the coverup. It's also about getting rid of the mindset that fostered the coverup. I'm talking about the mindset that the money from big sports must be protected by any means. That mindset is still there, as shown by the governor's lawsuit.

:yeahthat:

I am shocked, shocked I tell you! I didn't think Penn State alums donate to politicians, too.

NCAA is and has been a corrupt, arrogant, money-grubbing organization for at least 30 years. Allowing those turds to hold the majority of the funds is reprehensible.

I tend to agree with you. the NCAA is getting into areas that it should not, including involvement with school mascots for God's sake.

Since college athletic programs voluntarily participate with the NCAA, I can understand the sanctions involving post-season play, scholarships, etc. But I think 8-figure fines for something involving some sick bastards that will rot in hell for all time should be outside of their pervue.

I can't tell if you are being sarcastic or not. I have a Bachelors degree in Aerospace engineering from Penn State, which I got in 2008. I would argue that the Aerospace program is one of the best in the country. That degree has gotten me a very nice job.

Don't put down the entire school over a few "sick bastards".

If your going to assign guild through association, why stop at Penn State? How about the entire state.

Better yet, being we are a collection of states, how about anyone from any school in the last 10 years in the US gets nullified?

What happened was horrible, and lots of heads should roll. But to accuse the entire student body for something they had no clue was going on, is absurd.

I absolutely blame the whole state! It is the governor of the state (speaking for the people of PN) that is suing the NCAA. The whole damn state thinks more of it's self than the victims. They are more worried about their economy and the image of the school than the kids that were systematically raped for 10 years.

I'm sure you are a good engineer. I'm sure the engineering department is top notch. I wish the state of PN valued children as much as they do their beloved Penn State. :mad2:

So if you lived in Pennsylvania, you would be to blame? I just don't get your logic. Millions of people live in that state, and 99.99999% of them had no clue what was going on. Why punish them all?

If I heard it right on a news show today... The Guv of Penn is a sitting board of director at Penn State U ...

Can you say .CONFLICT OF INTEREST :dunno::mad::mad2::mad2:

A 60 million dollar fine paid to the NCAA and cutting scholarships is going to make it all better?

College football players who don't make a dime, and other sports participants at Penn State are the ones who are affected by these fines. And the NCAA rakes in the money.

This is why I wanted the sports department shut down. ;)

You tell me which is an effective deterrent:

FBI investigation, criminal charges and public shame with your name pasted all over the national media?

Or an NCAA fine and scholarship reductions after the fact? Paid from the pockets of the public university and not the persons responsible?

The only thing I really take issue with is the fine and scholarship reductions. Those just seem to be punishing the wrong people.

Both sound good to me...... And to add another fine..... Have Penn State reinburse the taxpayers for public funds they used during the sex abuse cover up timeframe... That should get their attention..:yikes:

Perhaps the NCAA could give that 60M back to the taxpayers
