I have an inflatable prosthesis which was originally implanted after some major abdominal injuries sustained in a car crash back in 1982. I declared this on my first medical application way back when and there has never been a problem. PRNC - yawn.
Now it has sprung a leak and ceased to function properly (they are only supposed to last 15 years and this has had plenty of use !) and I have to have it replaced.
After we have dispensed with all the jokes (which I have heard hundreds of times before) I was just wondering what I will have to provide for the AME.
Will a letter from my urologist stating that he replaced it, no complications etc be sufficient or will I have to have full hospital records or something else? Is this SI material or will it just be a normal in office issuance?
It is a fairly simple procedure with an infra pubic incision, takes about 20 minutes to do.
By the way, anyone having troubles in this department, these things work great and are far less trouble than taking Viagra.

This is not an answer to your question but just some commentary.

Im impressed that they are able to replace it..

A lot of those manufacturers of those devices (that didn't make other devices) went bankrupt after Viagra and other similar meds hit the market. I've had a couple patients pass through my care who had failed (or eroded) implants that were unable to be replaced which REALLY sucked for them because the erectile tissue was explanted to make the device implant possible.. now that the implant is gone, theres not much left to work with.

There are basically no aeromedical consequences (aside from infection) to a malfunctioning erection prosthesis, in situ or removed :).

There are some of us on this board who have had prostate cancer surgery and implants are an option (not explored at this time). We're not likely to crack jokes at your expense on this subject. Good luck with the replacement.

It's nice to know that the technology exists, and works as needed when "deployed" on the "battlefield".

Who knows when any one of use might sustain a similar injury and need to look into using this type of device (well except for the lady folk of course).

Never knew such a thing existed. Interesting.

And with the advent of Viagra and the like, they are becoming exceedingly rare...

I used to sail with a guy who had an implant - he said he really liked it because when it came time to pee over the rail and he was bundled up in foul weather gear, he could pump it up for a little extra reach to get outside all the layers. Viagra won't do that.
