I have been feeling a slight shutter in my Lycoming 320. Annual is due so the magnetos were pulled.
The inside of one cap had about 1/2 teaspoon of oil inside and I assume that is the reason for the
shutter. I don't know much about mags so my question is, are there any sparks inside the cap and if
so, could it have caused a fire? Thanks.

Meh....fire isn't my concern. Lack of spark due to shorts to ground would be more of a concern.

but...yes there is sparking in the distributor ring....but not enough localized heat to "burn" the oil. IMHO.

During a condition inspection on my home built doing a mag check. The mag was found to have a fair amount of oil in it from a failed seal. There was so much oil in the mag the points were under oil. This was a single ignition setup and the airplane flew the day before and was running just fine.
The mag was replaced with a new mag.
