Are the Hartzell and Tempest Oil Filters just as good as Champion Oil Filters or is their a downside?

I use the Tempests, and do so based upon some research I did five years ago, but cannot for the life of me recall what the distinguishing factor was.

The Hartzell's are what used to be Kellys, and I recall that there was a not-insignificant record of leaks and failures for Kelly filters. Have no idea whether that still applies or not.

Spruce does good case-lot deals on Tempests.

Only difference between the tempest and the champion I noted was the edges inside the tempest were on the sharp side and I sliced my hand open on it.

never used a Kelly/Hartzell

I think AvConsumer did a report on filters within the last couple years. IIRC they recommended the Tempest. I've been using them for a few years and have had no problems.

Tempests have a magnet in them to help catch bits of iron and steel, making it easier to inspect for contaminants. Their quality is fine. Cost considerably less than Champs.

Never used Kellys, but since I had much trouble with other Kelly stuff I wasn't inclined to try.
