I've had a buck jump out onto the runway when landing a couple of times. Ended up in the grass at HAO a numb of years ago.

Here's what it looks like when it happens to a motorcycle (on the GW parkway outside of DC)

Was that a "Deer Crossing" sign right at the beginning of the video?

You know, I think the problem was that the sign showed a deer crossing from the right but the deer actually came from the left. I guess that would be unexpected.

:D

hit one big ass buck on take off with a brand new Comanche 260 it was a total ,it had 15,16 hours on the clock and was on its way to the new owner .

That is the first time that I heard part two. I've listened to part one a couple of times in the past and always thought it was a prank. I didn't think anyone could be that stupid. So, now I know that there are people in the world who actually are that stupid. Amazing.

A cyclist (i.e. BICYCLE riding) buddy of mine was almost hit by one a few years ago. Deer leapt over his front wheel, narrowly missing his head. One of my least favorite animals.

Frakking deer. I'm sure that one of those stupid animals will be what dents or destroys one of the vehicles before anything else out here in the boonies. They are nature's retards.

We've already had one WALK into my wife's truck as she sat stopped on the road waiting for a herd to cross, and a neighbor had one jump into the driver's door of his new-to-him Suburban the first week he owned it.

Same road, but the "city" side of the county line, saw a lady plaster a doe with her black Escalade and then watched the city cop refuse to put the deer out of its misery with four broken legs and who knows what else. I guess a single shot from his service pistol would have been too much paperwork and letting the animal scream for an hour until it died was better while he waited for animal control to show up a half hour after it was dead. Frakking city idiots.

At least Antelope are smart enough to run away. Deer are total idiots.

A buddy of mine told me a hilarious story of his buddy who hit a deer with his convertible.
With the top down (gorgeous summer in Michigan) and at hwy speeds, the deer logically did not stay on the road but instead was flung upward over the crumpled hood, flew over the passenger compartment, kicked the driver in the head while rotating, landed on the trunk, slid off the crumpled trunk lid and took some other parts with him.

The driver was in shock for a few seconds and also thought he might have suffered a concussion from the blow to the head because he could swear he smelled s*it. (no, not burning feathers)
He checked the damage to his car just to find out that the deer added an insult to injury (the kick to the head, if you recall). The back seat was covered in deer poop.

You cannot keep a straight face if somebody is telling this story right. It might be sad but it is just oh-so-hilarious. :)

My story involves a squirrel intent on killing himself, and me, by running directly into the spokes of the front wheel of my bicycle. Squirrels are the deer of the rodent world.

I saw the results of a moose car accident in Alaska. The car was parked and a running moose ran into the side of the car, and totaled it. Meanwhile, Bullwinkle backed up, went around and kept on running.

Larry Grodsky, one of the top experts on motorcycle safety and training got taken out by a deer:

A few summers back I was on a rural road north of the city about 30min before sunrise when I saw a brief flash of brown blur in my peripheral vision and thought "this is going to hurt".

BANG......hey, I'm still upright. I look in the left rearview mirror and see everything that was in my left saddlebag tumbling down the road. I turned around and recovered everything but one shoe, couldn't find it anywhere. No sign of the deer, but there was deer snot on the saddlebag lid. Had it hit any more forward it would have been a very different day.

Anytime I see a deer I'm full into the ABS, get stopped ASAP! And if you see one, quite likely a few of his buddies are right behind.

Did you ever figure out why the deer wanted your shoe when what it really needed was a snot rag?

Interesting (to me, anyway) backstory:

A friend of mine, Greg, has been taken out three times by deer. He's come through each fine, although two of the three bikes were trashed. He wanted to order a carbon fiber farkle for his bike, but this particular vendor for some reason didn't ship to Canada where he lives. So he asked if the part could be shipped to me, and I bring it to him on our big summer group ride in northern WV.

So, on that day as I was headed north, Greg's bike part was in that left saddlebag. When I got to the destination, I tossed the box to him and told him I'd never carry another part for him, ever, as the deer KNEW it was his and tried to take it out, almost taking me out. I still kid him about it every time I see him.

The faster you go, the less chance it will end up in the car. "Really, Occifer, I was just protecting myself". As I recall, the Mythbusters proved it works with rain, so it should work with deer.

Around here, there's a garden guru that refers to them as "arboreal servants of satan".

I think that's the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, vice the GW; but point taken - deers am rats with longer legs, and also not as smart. The Baltimore-Washington corridor is overrun wid 'em, everywhere, as is Northern VA 'burbs. The area is heavily wooded, especially along the major right-of-ways.

My Bambi rule on the runway is, if all three wheels are on the ground, takeoff or landing, Bambi gets it, and the insurance company just bought an airplane. . .

A number of years ago, I was driving down the highway about 70 MPH on my motorcycle. I split through a deer herd that choose to cross the bit of highway I was driving down. I was a close call and I pulled over and had the shakes for about 10 minutes before I could continue. My buddy behind me couldn't believe I didn't hit any deer and none of the deer hit me.

Na, that's the GW near Belle View. Marshy on either side of the road.

Are you saying its rack were implants?

Actually, so many does are growing antlers that doe permits are now called "antlerless deer permits" in New York. Without the permit, we can take any antlered deer, regardless of sex. They had to change it because an increasing number of hunters were technically in violation for taking does without a permit. They weren't prosecuted, but it became an administrative PITA for DEC.

This phenomenon had already begun when I took my hunter safety course way back in the early 1970's, but it was still pretty rare. Nowadays its common. My dad took an antlered doe a few years back.

They taste pretty much the same, though.
