In summer, 2010, the wife and I will be flying to visit family who live near the Space Needle in Seattle. I've been to BFI years ago and it might be pretty big and pricey. How about Snohomish, Harvey Field or something similar? They'll pick us up so we don't need rental car or motel where we land.

Boeing Field is very GA friendly, and easy to enter from all directions, but you have other choices, like Bremerton, Paine, and Arlington. Renton, Find the easiest for your pickup to do, then go for it.

Renton is a good alternative; not that much further than BFI. Harvey Field would be a longish drive, and half of the drive is on secondary highways. Auburn would be a possibility, as it has good freeway access (about 25 minutes from downtown).

Lets hope he doesn't have to do the south valley freeway at rush hour. or any of the lake bridges.

I'd go BFI and stay on city streets. Seattle is nightmare traffic during rush hour.

I-5, I-90, 405, old 99 become a parking lot at the drop of a fender.

The GA problem at BFI (I fly from BFI) is the poor Transient parking. You must be escorted to & from the plane, & they charge by the 1/2 day. Ck the airport web site for details. If you know someone you might arrange parking in the tie down area, our club often has extra spots. I could ask the club pres, if one could be for rent this summer if you need one. Personally I would go to Auburn as suggested(I'm also in a club there). Cheaper tie down cheaper gas. nicer Airport Mgmt. Rush hour traffic in Auburn is a killer. but the rest of the day is ok. From Down town or the Queen Anne area, Bremerton is an easy do, and a nice ferry ride. And I believe the transit tie downs are free. good lunch too.

Like anywhere, it depends on what direction you're going, and at what time of day. If your trip is opposite to the "commute flow," (e.g, heading *into* Seattle in the evening) it isn't that bad. Surface streets around Seattle are bad either way, but as the OP's destination is in the vicinity of the Center, they're going to have to deal with it one way or the other.

Bremerton has its advantages, but time isn't one of them. The ferry ride itself is ~50 minutes, plus up to another hour to wait until the next departure. The ferry terminal is ~10 miles from the airport.

As I said before, if one wants to avoil BFI, Renton is the nearest alternative. Auburn is ~20 miles away from downtown (as the crow flies) and it's freeways nearly all the way. There's a park and ride lot at the South end with busses that'll take you downtown. Paine Field in Everett would be a good alternative, and you can probably catch a bus to downtown Seattle. Harvey Field in Snohomish is a great airport, but it's 40 miles from downtown.

They live in Queen Anne. I'l ask them what they think, too, but they're not active pilots.

Curious,,,,,, where is the long term transit parking at RTN?

Also the Factoria /east channel approach to RTN is a bit confusing if you don't know the reporting points.

I believe PAE is a better choice, better approaches. better parking, better services if needed Crown Aviation are great folks if you need help.

I never expected to see one of my favorite New Mexico airports show up in a discussion of where to park in Seattle.

Raton RTN is quite possibly the friendliest GA airport in the country. If you're anywhere in the area, stop in and you won't regret it.

In the Seattle area, I've had good experiences with Renton RNT, plus I didn't find Boeing Field at all overpriced or onerous.

I'll remember that, and nice catch on the Renton transposition of the R-T-N

I'll second the lunch. Great fish and chips at the cafe on the field. Tie down right in front. PWT is a favorte $100 hamburger run for me.

I have to disagree with Tom on the Ferry ride. It is to be avoided at all costs. slow, unreliable & inconvienient. The ferrys might be a novelty , but I pity the folk that have to rely on them. Dave
