Ok, since we had some interest, I thought I would start a thread. Let's start by voting on the destination. On Shelter Cove, I think that one is better as an overnight and maybe we should start with a day trip, but that is just my opinion, so I will include it. If you have other suggestions, just post them.

All those are good choices. I'd opt for a coastal destination since we are still in the season for good weather on the coast, and move inland as the Summer sets in. I always like Half Moon Bay since everthing is within easy walking distance. Columbia too.

I don't think Shelter Cove HAS to be an overnight destination. It's not that much farther than KLLR. Just not a lot to do other than stare at the tide pools.

I agree on taking advantage of the coastal weather. My vote is in for Monterey. So much to do there plus gives those that may want to make a weekend adventure out of it more options.

Shelter Cove; Black Sand beach is pretty cool, if the sun is out and I understand there is a good backpacking trail in the area (though I haven't tried it). There are a couple of dinner places (one is only open on weekends) and there is a lunch place at the Southern end of the airport (at the campground). Kimberly tried fishing, while we were there, but I don't think they caught anything.

HAF; I totally agree. It is very convenient. I have wanted to try the kayak rentals (right outside the airport).

Monterey; Most of the action is about 5 to 7 miles from the airport. I have brought a folding bike before and I have also done the crew car thing. I suppose, with a group, we could probably figure something out and there is a lot to do there.

Columbia; You are probably right. We should save that one for summer.

KLLR; We always have Rex as our tour guide! They have the Skunk Train, kayaking, shopping in the town, fishing and they seem to have a lot of different events. We could coordinate some other activities while we are there (instead of just lunch). Maybe hop on the train or something.

It would be a little too early for me...No availability for a plane. Anyone opposed to maybe the 9th or 16th?

I may be traveling the weekend of the 16th, but it would probably be on Sunday.

John I haven't been reading new threads on POA for months. Text me when you post something this awesome! I'm now a co-organizer of a local pilot meetup group too, which I think is how we met sacblues.

Feb. 2 is my birthday weekend and I have Coast Guard Aviation training that day and Feb. 3 I have my family party.

Feb. 9 I think would work but I did have plans (that can be changed), Feb. 10 being better.

Feb. 16 another Coast Guard Island thing but only a half day, that Sunday I'm free.

    Keep me posted.

We did not catch anything but then again we only had an hour before dinner and I didn't think we were in the right spot or using the right bait.

I love Little River, just went up there a few weeks ago with a pilot flying the G1000 who may want to join us if we do a fly out. The airport manager and Rex were there just hanging out and the moment I stepped out of the plane they said across the ramp:

    Is that you Kimberly?

So cute. The airport manager saw me staring at his pepsi can biplane from oshkosh and he got on a ladder and insisted I take it home. Little River is just good people.

Depending on the distance and if you are going solo, I may be able to chip in regarding rental cost. Though I might not be on your way. I could probably drive to an airport if this is just a day trip.

I realize you did not invite me to be a passenger, though, and of course I do need to stretch my own wings since I have not been able to have the time or money for much flying lately. If I'm alone I'd probably bring the 150. If I have a pilot passenger or a date I'd probably bring the Piper or the Skyhawk.

Well, the poll seemed like a good idea, but I guess lurkers can sku it. I will probably have an empty seat as my GF is usually not around on weekends.

Very cool. As mentioned I can drive somewhere to make the pick up more convenient. And I'm good about buying lunch or helping with gas. Keep me posted. I think on meetup we are trying to come up with ideas but I would not post this on there if you want just us (POA).

This is what they are up to on Sunday Feb. 10:

Lodi Airport Cafe, then walk to tour Jump Facility & Taxidermists

plan your home base departure time to arrive at Lodi Airport in time to meetup with the rest of us and order your lunch at 12 Noon. After lunch, we'll walk nearby on the airfield to tour the (hopefully active when we get there) Jump Facility. Then we'll walk a little further on the field to peek in the window or maybe even get to go inside an office that's filled with exotic animal heads hanging on the walls.

100LL fuel available on field. Right-hand traffic pattern due to skydiving activity - please confirm that.

This is a VFR weather event - Heavy rain or wind postpones to a future date to be determined.

I'm also inviting my artist meetup group to join us - they'll be bringing their canvases and paints or sketchbooks along - maybe some of them will draw a quick pic of your plane if you ask them. About five of them are expected to join us.

Plane-less pilots and passengers (like myself) are welcome to drive in and join us. ~ Martha, the event host for this one.

    I can't do 2/10 - my son has a school performance (show).

But if there are plans for another weekend I am also happy to fly and pick folks up en route.

An extra stop wouldn't be a problem (Lincoln is a bit East). I have never shared costs (just a thing of mine). I won't turn down a free lunch, though. I guess when we land on something, it would be a good to throw it up on MB. This just grew out of a few of us missing each other at the Maverick's Surf Contest.

That day I was stuck for more than ten hours at a second job preparing for a tax audit, no fun. On the flip side though I earned some flying money. A lot of pilots seems to be missing each other lately, just the nature of the beast I guess. We talked about this at the MB meeting, lots of pilots going lots of places but when they get there they never connect.

I won't go back there and the jump operation is the reason. I was in the pattern turning base to final and they took off into me. They then got on the radio and suggested that I divert (which of course I did). When I was at the pump, due to calm winds, they were working the runway in both directions for expedience and parked right in front of the pump to load passengers and even fueled with the engines running. I had to park over to the side and stretch the hose. When I started up to leave, they made a point of flipping me off. This is not a professional operation. I think they currently have a couple of lawsuits against them for safety issues.

John, holy cow. I had a bad experience when I was painting the compass rose on the runway and going home after a long day walking past a jump plane in Cloverdale. Are all / most jump pilots and operations just rude? This guy yelled at me in front of the students he was briefing and I was only going to use the restroom. He warned me that PROPS ARE DANGEROUS and his plane was parked, turned off, key in his hand, and I was in painters clothes and nowhere near his plane or prop. What a jerk. I didn't even tell him I was a pilot, I just left. Not worth my time.

Kimberly, we have a jump operation at Lincoln (they have a KA and a 182) and they are great. I have never had an issue with them, even though they are a busy operation. They even invite the local pilots to ride right seat with them, anytime.

This would be fun and it would be cool to see you guys again (Sac, Kim and John) and meet a few new people. My vote was for HAF, walk to a lot, although Columbia would be good too.

Sounds like I need to go to Lincoln. I could learn a lot or at least see "a day in the life of a jump pilot" sort of thing. How far hours wise in a plane would you say it is, direct, from Petaluma?

I am game for some walking too. We can probably get that at any of these, though. If we end up in Monterey, maybe we can get a crew car. There is quite a bit down around Cannery Row and the Aquarium or we rent bikes and ride around.

My original plans had me busy Friday night and Saturday morning, some of Saturday (meeting a pilot for coffee and discussing future flying together), with Sunday booked for an all day working day at my second job.

The Fri / Sat might be out since he has a cold, I have not heard back from the pilot despite two emails so I hope that doesn't mean he will not be there, and my second job might be able to switch Sun for Sat.

Tempting to do either day but I'm not sure what the weather is like and I know Dan mentioned he can't get a plane at the last minute.

Snowshoeing? I left a message for my Mom. I'll email the other guy, the pilot coffee thing, which can always be put off to another weekend, he seems cool. The date will know if he's sicker than a dog tomorrow but at this point I don't really wanna be sick. Now I need to check the weather. Which day would be best for you? Could you snow shoe and do this?

And while I agree with you on the too quick thing, we don't have to be the pilots who only hang out once a year sort of deal. We can do this AND keep the original plan. Sorry, I just haven't flown in a while and it would be fun plus I love Little River.

Looks like all / most of the events involve booze and are on Saturday however.
