My wife is finally letting me take her out either Tues or Thurs evening depending on weather and other factors. Looking for a nice place to eat within about 100nm of EAU.

Doesn't have to be fancy just good food and on or close and easy to get to from the airport. Scenic views would be a plus. Anyone know of someplace like that?

Lacrosse or Madison. Call first to make sure the restaurant is open when you get there.

Verify all info...it has old data for some fields.

Plae Bistro in Green Bay. 5 minutes from the airport and a 144 NM from EAU. I eat at a lot of nice restaurants and that one is the best value/quality I've ever been to. Dinner for two with drinks was $100 and awesome. Number one restaurant in Green Bay according to trip advisor and deservedly so. Atmosphere is nice but not stuffy or formal, cool place.

Since I posted we had settled on one of two options... there's a hamburger social at KEGV that night but she may or may not need to be home an hour after that starts so that's probably out.

Other option is one we'd talked about while I was still training- 4R5 on Madeline island... hopefully some cool sights to see on the way in, it's a 1.5 mile walk into town from the airport and they supposedly have all kinds of interesting stuff there.

Keep the suggestions coming though, a lot of those sound interesting for a future trip. Generally we tend to favor hole in the wall places with awesome food over the types of places with dress codes but always good to have something in the back pocket for an anniversary or something.

For a short trip, Phillips. It's been a few years since I've been there, but Harbor View restaurant is on the lake right across the road from the airport.

I second that. Just watch out for the golfers :D
Yeah, and IIRC there's danger of golf balls hitting parked or taxiing airplanes. Haven't been there in a while though.

Madeline Island has a couple eateries but IME they tend to get pretty busy on weekends. And the walk from airport to town is booooring but the town's pretty interesting and if you have the time you can ride the ferry to/from the mainland for fun. A couple times I've taken bikes along and that makes the trip to town and back much quicker.

Well this morning we got up and both kind of decided at the same time we didn't feel like walking so far in the summer- decided to wait till fall to do Madeline Island.

Ended up going to Phillips instead. Liked the Harbor View... good burger. Fuel, burger, and a reuben sandwich ended up being right around $100 too. Good intro cross-country for my wife, says she will go again.

Win! Nicely done!

If you're looking for good food (/biking/camping/etc), check out 3D2, Ephraim-Gibraltar in Door County. GREAT little airport, very close to Peninsula State Park. There's a "pilot house" on the field - Punch in the CTAF to get a key, and inside there's keys to the courtesy van in the parking lot. Or, they have 8 bikes on the field that you can borrow to ride into town or into the park. Or, there's a list of local businesses that will come and pick you up from the airport!

We've had good eats at the Gibraltar Grill, and also some spectacular pizza at the Wild Tomato. It's become my favorite place to fly for food except for in winter when most things are closed.

When my wife and go to Door County and she's taking cooking classes or something, I go hang out at that airport. One fall Saturday I was visiting with the airport manager for the day, who flies out Timmerman, and just does that on the weekends.

Whoa... I bet he flies the Baron across the row from me.

Courtesy van? So no more calling the owner of Gibraltar Grill for a ride? As happy as he was to come get me (and offered a ride to anywhere, even if it wasn't his restaurant), I still felt like I was putting the guy out.

The courtesy van will make this a more frequent destination of mine as well. I love that airport and area!

Last time I was there, last year, the van is a late 80's model Aerostar...nothing pretty, nothing nice..but it works.

That's exactly what it should be. As long as it gets me to/from the airport, I'm happy. I've used a crew car at KRFD a number of times. My first car (20 years ago) was newer than this one, but it runs well and gets me from point A to point B without requiring me to go through the hassle of renting something. Fill it up when I'm done, tip the lady who gave me the keys and be on my way. Couldn't be easier and I wish more airports had the option. Glad to hear that 3D2 does, since that's one of the things that's kept me from flying in there more often (not wanting to bother the guy who offered, but probably has better things to do than shuttle me and my passengers around).

Been there since the first time I went a couple years ago. As stated, it's an old Aerostar but it does the trick. Just be sure to fill it up with gas because the fuel gauge is wrong and always shows full, so I think a lot of people see that and just don't fill it up when they're done with it.

Chetek, WI Y23 has a courtesy car. Also bicycles to borrow. The town is pretty close to the airport and the terrain is flat so it is an easy bike ride. B&B Bar in town has good burgers.

Amery, WI KAHH has a courtesy car. Very good pizza on the north side of town at Village Pizzaria. There is also an old fashioned ice cream/malt shop in town and a bar/bowling alley.

Traveling further afield, Hutchinson, MN KHCD has a crew car. Many options in town although I haven't been to any of them.

You can fly into Hinckley 04W Field of Dreams airport and call the nearby casino, they will pick you up and there are food options there.

Two Harbors KTWM and Betty's Pies is a good stop too. Whether or not you're brave enough to fly over the lake and save a few minutes is up to you. Call the airport manager and ask how to get access to the courtesy car.

Madeline Island 4R5 is a fun stop. There is a business in town that rents bikes/mopeds and they will pick you up if you rent from them. They have a flier in the A/D building. I personally bring my own bikes and the ride into town is pretty easy. If you are forced to ride your bike at night, it can be a tad sketchy because there is no shoulder on the road from town into the airport. I hope your bike has lights... Also you will be swarmed with mosquitoes at night.

Ashland ASX has two courtesy cars you could drive into town and there are many food options.

The place that rents scooters there will come pick you up from the airport and drop you off if you rent a scooter. It wasn't expensive.
