Man! Why didn't this stuff ever happen when I lived there.

Btw - "Chile"

Maybe it did, and you didn't know. On my first or second solo flight, about this time last year, I went to Belen KE80 to practice, and the sky was black with airplanes (well, I'm exaggerating, but it looked that way). One guy in an experimental turned inside me on base and I had to do a go-around. It was quite exciting. The ABQ Approach controller mentioned that "they are having a pancake breakfast". I was so green back then, that I did not think to taxi to the ramp and mingle. To this day I have no idea about 1. who organized the whole thing, and 2. how did they communicate the date to other pilots? Clearly a number of people flew in, so how did they know?

P.S. According to my logbook, it was my 1st post-solo flight, October 30th 2010.

The weather was unexpectedly poor in the morning, which dampened the enthusiasm of many. Almost half aircraft arrived after 12 p.m., when the rain stopped.

You should seen the time I almost got killed by some guy in an RV-10 at GNT. I'm all for midfield crossovers to enter downwind, but don't do it when an airplane alot slower than you is on downwind and you're 1 mile away on the other side of the runway about to cross into the slower airplanes flight path . I had a few words with him before he went off to breakfast...

If you want to get together with area pilots, consider joining your local EAA chapter...The one based out of SAF/LAM (can't remember the number-I'm not a member) is very active and regularly has fly outs.

...and don't forget the balloon fiesta October 1-9. I'll be down the first weekend with a group from the Colorado Pilots Association.

It's impossible to fly into the Balloon Fiesta. Their base is a dedicated field under a TFR. About the best you can do is fly into KAEG or KABQ and find a rental car. I like those people in theory. The balloons are never a problem despite their insane numbers, which attests to organization and balloon pilots. But I never had a personal contact with anyone involved.

My next mission is Tucumcari Airshow, October 5. It's my first time to a "real" airshow with military demos. I saw no NOTAM yet, but I telephoned the airport management. A gentleman called Steve told me to expect a black-out time from 12:00 to 17:00 local (or actually until the final act lands). So, it's imperative to arrive well in advance. I'll be flying N28GX rental.

We used to have our own fly-ins all over the state....lots of us from the Roswell area would fly to Santa Rosa, White City, Belen, Artesia or just around. We had another bunch of slow guys (taylorcrafts, J4 Cub, Chief, Citabria and other pokies) who flew around the ABQ metro area staging our own fly-ins up to Santa Fe, Belen, Los Lunas, Soccorro and places that had no runways. All you need for a fly-in is some friends.....

KONM Socorro 2011/09/24

Aircraft ~ 40

CAP volunteers had plenty of work marshalling airplanes. Pictured is N90GX, a sister ship of N28GX, based out of Las Vegas... Nevada(!).

I am preparing for the breakfast fly-in in Artesia tomorrow, and I noticed that Tucumcari NOTAM is issued:
!FDC 1/3761 ZAB NM.. FLIGHT RESTRICTION TUCUMCARI MUNICIPAL AIRPORT, TUCUMCARI, NM. DUE TO HIGH PERFORMANCE AERIAL DEMONSTRATIONS DURING THE TUCUMCARI ROTARY CLUB AIR SHOW, EFFECTIVE:

1110051800 UTC UNTIL 1110052100 UTC.
PURSUANT TO 14 CFR SECTION 91.145, MANAGEMENT OF AIRCRAFT OPERATIONS IN THE VICINITY OF AERIAL DEMONSTRATIONS AND MAJOR SPORTING EVENTS, AIRCRAFT OPERATIONS ARE PROHIBITED WITHIN A 5 NMR OF 351050N/1033611W OR THE TUCUMCARI /TCC/ VORTAC 235 DEGREE RADIAL AT .2 NM, AT AND BELOW 13000 FT MSL UNLESS AUTHORIZED BY ATC. GEORGE CLINE, PHONE 336-337-8183, IS THE POINT OF CONTACT. THE ALBUQUERQUE /ZAB/ CENTER, PHONE 505-856-4573, IS THE COORDINATION FACILITY.
1800 UTC is 12 p.m. Mountain, 2100 UTC is 3 p.m. This is a bit less than I expected.

Small state we live in....The guy that owns NM Sport aviation was my CFI for both my PPL and IR-I'm checked out in 28GX, but I haven't flown it since March.

A bunch of the same guys fly up to SAF from ABQ/AEG just about every weekend for breakfast at the airport cafe.

I was the only attendee who flew in. Kind of amazing in a bad way.
