I had a meeting with the Parks and Rec director today. She asked if I would be interested in a job at the pool this summer. She wants me to observe the dynamics of everyday activity at the aquatic center, identify problems, then solve them using the resources available through P&R. That is it. Walk in, stand around, watch what is going on, and if I see anything that looks like it is going to be a problem, I fix it. I also have to give the staff some training prior the the pool opening. Twenty hours a week, no weekends. I accepted. She agreed on wages much too fast. OK, just one thing though, I have to take a lifeguard class next week with a bunch of highschool kids who are going to work there this summer. Everyone on the "deck" has to be certified. Yikes, I'm an old man. This is going to be interesting.:fcross:

good thing you took those swimming lessons!

No kidding. The Director asked me if I thought that I could swim well enough to pass the test, which is 300 yards. No problem. Four months ago I wouldn't have been too sure about that.

Red Cross Sr. Lifesaving is pretty simple stuff. I've done it a couple times, once for fun and once to lifegard at a city pool.

I really only remember a few things about it. One was having to drag a folding metal chair from the bottom of the deep end to the shallow end when I was a scrawny 12 yr old (when I took the class for fun). I was too young to earn the Sr. patch so they gave me the Jr. patch. The release moves they teach are sorta neat: Suck, tuck, and duck if someone grabs you from behind and the pelvic pinch if someone grabs you from the front. The carries are all simple enough...the side stroke is your friend. Anyway, none of the stuff is really needed for a city pool but I guess it gives more confidence in the water.

I think that the scrawny 12 year old thing is going to be very awkward for me. I am 60 years old. I just feel real strange about taking a swimming class with a bunch of middle school and high school kids. Gotta do it though. Next week is spring break, so they are having two class during the week.

Just leave the speedo at home. You'll do fine.

Parks and Recreation? They could make a TV show about you.

Oh wait..... never mind.:cornut:

I was on line looking at Billabong boardshorts. I think that is going to be my work attire, billabongs, a sta-dry t shirt, and a pair of flip flops. Yep, I already love this job, and I don't even start for a month and a half.:D

you need to get them to install one of those surfing wave wall things so you can practice for mexico next year.

btw Leah says that pool in Ames is deeper than the minimum required by Red Cross. 12 feet or something. But she managed to do it twice (initial and recurrent) so you should too.

See if the retirement center will run a bus to the pool so you can cultivate your own set of groupies.

Update. I know that you have all been waiting to see how things are going with my new job. Or, maybe not. I took the lifeguard class this weekend. Three sixteen year old girls, one seventeen year old boy, and me. It was not that difficult, but it was very challenging, if that makes sense. In other words you can get through it, but you are going to have to work at it. Saturday night I was feeling every one of my sixty years, but Sunday I rallied. So it was thirty hours of training in three days, Friday evening, Saturday, and Sunday all day. A lot of class time, and a lot of hours in the water. I'm tired and sore today, but I'm done. Next stop is two pre-season training sessions, then opening day. My wife gave me a pair of Billabongs as a graduation present for passing the lifeguard class. I'm pretty sure that at this point I am the oldest certified lifeguard in Ames. :D

Leah says: Congratulations, that is not an easy class.

Good job. I'm thinking passing the course at sixty is an accomplishment which demonstrates excellent physical and mental condition.

Thank you, I appreciate that. I've been working up to it. I've been swimming laps in the pool at least three times a week for most of the winter.

Volcom's are better than Billabong's....

I met with the assistant director and the pool manager yesterday. I filled out all of my employment paperwork and I am now officially employed. I have several duties. The first is the identifying problems and finding solutions that I mentioned in my original post. Second is that I am going to be trained on all of the "equipment" that people can check out or play on, or whatever, and I will show them how to use the equipment when they check it out. I'll probably help repair equipment as well, but they have someone else who does that as their primary job. Then the third part is that I will serve as a fill in lifeguard if they are short, or if it becomes so crowded that they have to put another lifeguard out. The Aquatic Center does not open until Memorial Day weekend. I have some pre-season training that I have to attend, and some pre-season training that I am going to give. They are installing new security cameras, and I have to help determine where they will be located. Until then, I am going to take some lifeguard rotations at the indoor municipal pool for the lunch time lap swimmers. So there you go, no more lazing around the house all day. I'm a working man now.

So your wife is no longer married to an unemployed bum?

I just picked up a second job - Adjunct Professor - I get to push kids around too!

(When am I going to have time to fly??? :hairraise:)

I had neighbors once who were Faculty at Iowa State. They claimed that the primary sport there was drinking.

She got tenure, but he didn't, so they had to leave. Actually, he later got a Pharmacy degree on her nickel (benefits of being a faculty spouse) and then they divorced.

Max, you totally got it made. Your job is to watch young girls get wet in swim suits. And you get paid. There's a lot of guys who would do that for free. There are more who would pay to do it, but we don't want to get into that.

I think that my wife would prefer to be married to an unemployed bum. I'll bet your job pays a lot better than my job, but I'll bet the scenery at mine is going to be better. Of course, you could make bikinis mandatory for class attendance.

I know, that is why I keep posting about it. You guys are really going to be sick of it by the time the summer is over, that is if you aren't already. :D

I will be teaching Mechatronics this summer. I expect the class to be full of guys.

No bikinis required.

I came back from a long weekend in New York City, where my son graduated from college, and I looked at the work schedule on line. I noticed that I have been promoted to Deck Supervisor. They had talked to me about that last week, but they had not made up their mind by the time I left for New York. They actually created a position for me when they hired me last winter. Then a couple of weeks ago one of the Deck Supervisors decided that she just wanted to do lifeguarding, so they were talking about moving me into that position. I guess that now the Pool Bum position either needs filling, or they got rid of it. I The last two weeks have been a lot of training. I have some training tomorrow, and every day next week. I don't have to work Memorial Day weekend, but I am scheduled for Memorial Day itself for my first day on the dedck. This is going to be interesting.

"TWEEEEETT, No Running!!!" That's pretty much what it's gonna be like, unless it's like here in SF and the place will be empty because it's cold as winter...

It looks to me like I'm not going to have to TWEEEETT anyone. I'm going to be in charge of the TWEEETTers among other thing. Anyway I think that is what I am doing. Communications is not a big thing here it appears. I'll have to wait and see. I was hired for one thing, then changed to another without a whole lot talking about it. As long as I get to spend the summer in the sun, and I don't have to work too hard, it will be fine.

LOL, either way it's what you'll be hearing.;) Oh yeah, if you're the Deck Boss, the communications thing? That's your job now.

BTW, They just heaped a big pile of liability on you, so your summer isn't gonna exactly be care free...

You're so positive Henning. You are always looking at the bright side of things. I've dealt with liability before. That word does not scare me. I'll admit though that I was looking for a little less responsibility this summer, and it seems like I'm picking up more as we go along here. I mentioned that to my wife, and she said that if I wasn't up to it I should quit. So I guess I'm not complaining. It will be good I think. If not, I'll buy a season pass.

Yesterday was my first day on the job. I wasn't scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, but it was cold and rain, so they closed both days early. Yesterday was ninety degrees and sunny. So I showed up for my shift, and all of the shift leaders who were supposed to be done were still there working, It was a zoo. I got sent to the ramp that leads to the lazy river to make sure that everyone going into it was following the rules, and there are a lot of rules. There were two lifeguards at the end of the ramp trying to ride herd in the water. After a little more than an hour of that they sent a lifeguard to relieve me at the top of the ramp. Then I had to go give deep water tests to twelve and under. All in all we gave over two hundred deep water tests yesterday. We had three lanes at one end of one of the pools. They had to swim half way across, tread water for thirty seconds, then swim back. They had to swim, not flail. I did that for almost two hours. At one point there was a kid about ten years old, and he was standing in line with his mother. That wasn't unusual, for a parent to stand in line with a kid. He was in the middle lane. I told them to go, and as soon as that kid let go of the side of the pool, he went straight to the bottom. I have to admit that I've never seen anyone sink that fast. I remember jumping in the pool and thinking, "holy cow, this kid can't swim a lick." So I grabbed him by the arm, pulled him up and lifted him up to his mother. I told her to wait, as I had two other kids heading across the pool. I jumped out, ran to the mid point of the pool and they were already treading water, I counted it off to the count of twenty or twenty-five as they had been there a while before I got there, and then sent them back. By that time mom and the kid had left. I really wanted to get that kid enrolled in swimming lessons, and i'm kind of disappointed that they took off. I wouldn't recognize the kid again, unless he was sinking. On the other side of the coin, I had a six year old pass the deep water test. He struggled a little, but he did it fair and square. I told his dad that I would pass him, but only if the dad would swim with him if he went into the deep end. I don't know why I did that, there were other kids who worked just as hard to pass it, but that kid looked so small out there. The dad said that he would. So that was my first day. I have in-service lifeguard training at ten this morning, then back on shift at twelve-thirty. I'm already tired.
