So I'm commercial instrument rated with ASES ASEL AMEL and 280 hours. I was studying for my CFI ride but long story short I ****ed off the examiners in my state and now I have to take the ride from the FAA—which is fine by me (it's free)—but they are currently having a funding problem as most people know. Is it ludicrous for me to think that I might be able to get a non-CFI flying job while I'm waiting for the govt to restart? Any thoughts? Are other people in similar situations?

I’m curious to know what you did to **** off the DPE.

Sorry I’m not a great deal of help to you.

You have 280 hrs. Exactly what kind of flying job do you think you’re going to get? You’ve trained a lot. Have you ever actually left an airport pattern...?

Seaplane training, boat loads of XC, instrument, 23.5 multi etc. I'm more or less just curious if I could even get a job.

Outside of instructing, banner towing, towing gliders, or throwing out meat bombs, probably not. Boatloads of XC in 280 hours is laughable by the way.

With time like mine you have to talk proportionally. I just got kinda hosed with the whole shut down as I wanted CFI and now I need to find a job. My question is is there a possibility of something else or do I still have some grinding to do?

You posted on 1/27/2019. Which government needs restarting?

The Mist underscore Mist moniker is cute though.

    Troll on.

Uh, how is that possible? Did you show up drunk or smoking a doobie? Did you try and preflight the crew car or perhaps, his wife instead!

Government reopened on Friday. They should be in the office Monday. Give them a call. And to answer your other question, yes you will need more than 280 hours to get paid to fly doing almost anything.

Once I get CFI is it reasonable to expect to get hired somewhere?

Odds are ALWAYS terrible for getting an FAA examiner. That's why DPE's exist in the first place, don't ya know?

Can't speculate on the federal governments status in 3 days, weeks, months or years. That would be political and against the RoC's.

    Good luck!

You need to build time. Some of the survey/photo groups will have a 500/minimum

Depends on your location and financial requirements. Lots of places around the country needing instructors. Some might even pay a living wage.

Good luck in getting an FAA examiner in any reasonable time. If you managed to upset a DPE,good luck with the FAA ride.

You pay the DPE to show up, not to pass you.

If I was a DPE and you stiffed me, I'd blackball you in a heartbeat as well.

I'm curious how many students you would want to stiff you for instruction?

    No mercy from me.

Come fly in AK and grind some humility into your commercial license. They all are hiring, some fly 1900s and might hire extremely low time commercial ME guys, like yourself. Keep up the good work and you can move to 737s, Hercs, DC9s, DC6s in the bush.

Hopefully once you eventually get your CFI and recommend students for their checkride, your poor behavior won’t be held against them.

Also I imagine giving checkrides will be a low priority as the FAA tries to resume normal operations. They probably have a backlog of inspections and other operator issues to catch up on.

I had to show up at his place. I showed up though an he had a horrible attitude. Wouldn't give me the time of day and was REALLY concerned about the check. I had heard from other CFIs at other FBOs that he has been known to pull shenanigans. All that and then he fails me on some super fringe FOI in like 5 minutes—oh and he demanded more money because of a paper 8710. I'll admit I was wrong but you can at least see why I'd be ticked.

I like your caption. Book worth reading?

I only read some of it. It's a lot of chest beating. The "Total stud bush pilot" part still makes me chuckle.

I'm still waiting to get an autographed copy. :D

Well, you’ve learned a valuable lesson the hard way. Aviation is a very small community. You never know what will come back to bite you in the ***.

Around here you will have a pretty significant wait for a DPE, you aren't getting near the FAA for a checkride. They are all just too busy.

Its rare to see someone **** off a DPE to the point where the DPE won't give them checkrides anymore, but it has happened a few times. Of course the DPE's talk, there are only a handful of them at most in most area and they are all experienced pilots.

It's not a good start to an aviation career, when you can't even get a checkride from anyone that knows you.

You chose a poor hill to die on. Try a DPE in a different state.

Reminds me of this. Just insert DPE for Doctor and BR_Mist for Elaine. Now it is in your permanent record.

BTW... You should still look him up and pay him. Although you might disagree, he did perform the service you were supposed to pay him for. You're not the first one to bust a checkride. And CFI is one of the most busted rides. It's almost a rite of passage.

Do the right thing and consider it a lesson learned. Oh, and pay him cash.

Form of payment is one of the questions I ask during the scheduling of the ride. It appears to me they appreciate my asking so that this doesn't snag up the process on checkride day.
