Hi! I am looking to hitch a ride from Wichita, KS to Orlando, FL or Sarasota, FL this Thursday evening or Friday morning to attend my fathers burial at the Sarasota National Cemetery on Friday at 1pm. I just found out about the arrangements this afternoon, and it being 2 days from leaving PLUS a holiday weekend, the prices are outrageous. I am sorry if this is not allowed, please remove. I know this is a long shot, but I have to try.

Thank you!

Sorry I can't help directly as I'm on the wrong coast…. but it sometimes helps to tell the airline the purpose is bereavement. Sometimes.

Just for giggles, I peeked on Southwest for your flight and date, and found $450 per person round trip unrestricted, with no problem with availability. That's really not that bad, only about twice the discount fare. A light aircraft will cost a lot more than that.

Thanks! The evening flight is sold out. I will keep looking.

Small planes are not all that economical.

I just did the math and it would cost ~$470 in fuel 1 way and we can't really fly through weather like swa can for the most part.

Our type of planes are not a solid bet for a mission like yours that requires specific timing.

The saying is "Time to spare, Go by air" with regard to non commercial transport types of planes.

Are you sayin' that yer 65 hp cub-in-need-of-an-overhaul like performing plastic airplane which happens to climb like a homesick stool-pigeon can't be relied on to make such a routine journey?

Sounds to me you need to find a 135 charter outfit.

You're going to be looking at $600hr at minimum. If weather is poor you're looking at a more capable aircraft, which brings a larger price tag, but probably goes a little faster.

Haha the plane is capable but the pilot may not be and his wallet may not be equipped for such a task

Do airlines still offer bereavement fares? I thought it was like 1/2 price??

Some, or many of us would like to help, but there are very arcane rules against giving rides to someone based on a set destination and schedule. I won't go into the complexities, but I doubt a private pilot would take on a passenger like this(although I personally wouldn't mind), and the next step up is a charter. The slowest, most economical charter flight and pilot would be well over double the cost of any commercial fare except maybe first class, walk up fare.

There is no free lunch out there, and the airlines do not lend themselves to last-minute travel. Personally, I would hop in the car and drive it, but that's just me, and I've driven cross country many times. With a decent driver, it's 2 twelve hour drives one way. Doable, if not fun. Gen Aviation is not the answer, sorry, and sorry for your loss.

If she thinks airline prices are outrageous she will think charter prices are even more outrageous.

Don't airlines give discounts on bereavement fares? I thought they did in the past but have never looked into it.

Any time I've looked at a bereavement fare it hasn't been much cheaper.

Drive. Rent a car if you have to, Still be cheaper.

Trying to get a bereavement fare can be a nightmare or really easy, depending on the airline, and frequently, not much of a discount. United wanted proof, eg a copy of the death certificate, but that was 10 yrs ago. Things may have changed by now.

Sorry... Didn't mean to post in bad taste. I hope I didn't upset the OP.

It wasn't long after I bought my first plane, I got the request "I'm relocating from California to North Carolina and I can't take my dogs on the flight" (I know, why not) "so do you think you could fly us there?"

Uhhh..... Let me do the math......
