Saw this article/video this morning.

Basically NASA is dropping 172's from ~100 ft onto various surfaces to test ELT performance and to try and come up with new standards to make them more reliable.

This is an excellent use for the thousands of run out, derelict ramp queens around the country.
 
I'm sure a lot of students landings could be considered controlled crashes. Not say I ever had a bad landing.
