I've found something you guys need to give a try. It was featured at a Tarrant County Texas Aggie Club gathering recently since the distillery is owned by an Aggie and a strong supporter of the 12th Man foundation.

It is REALLY good. Smooth, great taste, and not the massive "back of the throat burn" some spirits give me.

Whiskey comes from Tennessee, bourbon from Kentucky, I'm not aware of anything else that is for for consumption.

Thanks for the recommendation. If I see it, I will try it.

I'm a bourbon guy myself, but thanks.

I enjoy burbons too... To my palate, this has a taste close Knob Creek, but just a touch sweeter, and not as much "dark smoke". If your local watering hole has Rebecca Creek, try it..

I dipped my own bottle when visiting the Makers Mark factory. I tended towards the 12yo Evan Williams and some of their single barrel stuff however, but I couldn't resist getting some of the try box (White Dog) bottles as well. I'm also rather fond of many of the Ryes from Kentucky and Virginia.

We hear of wine tastings frequently...

What I want to participate is a Whiskey tasting.... where we have samples of various type and an expert explaining what it is we're sampling.

See my post above about the KY Bourbon Trail, a very good experience. You will be able to taste 3-5 bourbons at each of the eight distilleries and most have very good folks describing the attributes of each bourbon.

Just be sure to have a DD for maximum enjoyment!

Thanks but I'm still working on tasting and drinking bourbon.

If you're ever in Louisville, go to the Galt House and inside there's a place called Jockey Silks.... Highly recommend. If you need me to accompany you to explain that you just paid too much for Pappy Rye, by all means. :D

I did a bourbon tasting party for a few friends and had 9 different bourbons with some finger food went over great.going to make it an annual event with different bourbons.

A Texas vs. Colorado PoA Whiskey Tasting Competition? There's an idea!

My father-in-law likes his whiskey. He has MS, so he sips it all day to help with the pain, and because he likes the taste. He yelled at me for putting coke in some Tennessee Honey once. I'm going to have to remember this thread at Christmas time.

Now I ain't going to yell at you for bumping your nosewheel or making accusatory statements about the CFI profession BUT IF YOU EVER put Coke in Tennessee Whiskey again  :). Prohibition is over, no need to mask the taste.

If you want a hard drink that does not burn the back of the throat try Akvavit. Keep it in your freezer. It goes down like water, before you know it, the room will be spinning, your friends will have six eyes, and you'll be going down for the count.

Agreed. But for the record, I like CFI's. I plan on doing that in retirement.

I completely understand that sentiment with good single malts or better blends, but I often will order a Jack and Ginger when I want a refreshing drink that isn't quite as strong.

Putting anything but ice in good bourbon should be prohibited.will try the Colorado bourbon if I can find it on the east coast.

If the competition is in amount consumed, I'm in. Especially after today.

I'll do a different thread on that. Sigh.

Just read the thread... prayers out to you and your family.

BETTER BRANDS? BETTER BRANDS? :mad2: :mad2: There are exactly TWO (2) Tennesse Whiskeys, George and Jack. There are no "better brands"

If It's around I'll take a 1/5 of Old Rip (Highly recommend), and if I have money, Bookers. But Jack is sippin' whiskey and the "go to every time, never lets you down". I have a friend who will be buried at the distillery in Lynchburg, I missed out on a plot :D.

Sorry, I guess I wasn't clear. Better blends, as in scotch. I have no problem mixing Jack.

AggieMike, no need to preface this thread as [NA]. I think we've seen that this topic is very much [A] related.

My go-to everyday bourbon is Makers Mark, unless I can find some smaller batch stuff. Knob Creek is good.

That being said, bourbon is my winter drink, i.e. when you throw on jeans and a sweatshirt in the fall. When you throw on shorts in the spring, out comes the Bombay Sapphire, which stays fully engaged until football weather begins.

Actually, the Bourbon makers disagree with you. In critical evaluations, they will often show adding a little water will change (often to being more pleasant) the sensory effects. I've never been offered ice during a tasting, it just makes it cold and numbs the senses.

Note that the master distillers (oddly all who are Beam family descendants) use smell alone when evaluating the contents of the barrels for selecting/blending.

It's quite an eye opening thing learning about spirits. I'm primarily a wine expert (hold several certifications and am in the middle of a three year wine judge certification course now), but one of my certifications is from the Wine and Spirits Education Trust (out of the UK) so we had to study our gins and whisk(e)ys as well.

Amusingly, bourbon and wine have opposite aging arguments. Wine you try to hold very still and temperature controlled. Bourbon, the best stuff comes from the top of the rickhouses, where the temperatures swing from beastly code to unbearably hot.

...and you're right. I'm very fond of Bombay Sapphire in the hotter months either straight up (one of the few gins I can tolerate that way) or in my G&T.

After listening to the Texans wax rhapsodic about Shiner Bock and Killian's I am somewhat dubious. And yes, I drink Bourbon (side-effect of caring for boisterous in-laws). Never saw the point of adding water, since water is what is removed in the distillation process. I do like ice though.

I would agree bourbon is more of a cold weather drink, just as more robust beers (porters and stouts) are winter beers. Summer I like Mount Gay rum and lighter beers such as PBR.

After sailng the BVI's a few years back I have a whole new appreciation for rum based drinks

It's Friday and the northeast is rained in again, oing to the airport and hanger fly with the aero club members and of course have a bourbon or two .think I will go with a wood ford reserve.

+1. Good stuff, Woodford.

Not a big fan of Woodford Reserve. It has an odd after taste IMO.

Guess it is all personal taste.. So many bourbons, so little time!

Woodford is my favorite, but then again, can't think of one off-hand that I absolutely hated. Do like them with a bit of ice.

Never been a big Scotch fan, but Glenfidduch isn't bad at all.

I could find a Bourbon you'd hate. Trust me. I cook with one.

Me, I don't think I've found an alcoholic beverage I don't like. Actually, I have to take that back, I can't stand vodka martinis. Love gin martinis. My old man was the exact opposite. Go figure.

If I drink Scotch, I like the cheaper blended stuff like Cutty Sark. However, I've since discovered Irish whiskeys, and I need not go back to Scotch ever again. It has the same peat flavor as Scotch, but it is sooooo much smoother.

Woodford is a well drink in Kentucky. Not a big fan.

I like Knob Creek single barrel reserve for better stuff and Four Roses Yellow as my "table" bourbon. For motorcycle trips where I will be passing the bottle I sometimes still revert back to Evan Williams green in the convenient shatterproof plastic bottle. Classy!
