I apologize first off for not being around a lot lately. I've been busy training new students.

Anyway I found a Failure to Deliver Notice in my mailbox this morning. Apparently they couldn't deliver a headphone adapter.

Well while out at lunch today I stopped by the our Post Office like 1000 times before and handed the lady the notice. She proceeded to go fetch my small package and asked me to sign for it. Ok, that's fine so I signed the pad, thanked her and reached for my package. WRONG thing to do. She said I still needed to give her my Drivers license and write out my full name and address on the computer.

I stopped, looked at her and ask why in the world did she need these items? Her answer was that a new Homeland Security rule requires photocopied DL and handwritten address for any package picked up. :yikes: WHAT!??!?

Umm I'm sorry you already have my address and you don't need my DL for a freaking LETTER......

When did this start and has this happened to anyone else?

RANT over

As a retailer, this information is very important to me, so thank you for posting this.

So you ended up getting your package, but had to fill out information on a computer to get it, or just show your ID?

Shoulda sent K to pick it up.... :D

(looks like we missed doing Petit Jean this fall... shall we try for spring?)

I had to hand her my DL she disappeared to the back for a few minutes. I also had to write out my name and address on the payment screen.

They did this to everyone that picked up a package with a Failure to Deliver slip.

Oh my package wasn't delivered because the postwoman had a sub that didn't know to leave the letter on the porch.

That's the rule at my post office, too, but apparently they don't have to if they personally know the recipient. In my frog-fart village of < 600 full-time residents, where we have no carrier route service, that means pretty much everyone. The only time I have to show ID is when they have a vacation sub running the place.

What's funny is I didn't have to do this when I received a letter from DHS for my Trusted Traveler IDs. They just handed me the letter and said have a good day.

no - I'm like 'what drivers license?' you can have my Homeland Security issued ID card for Global Entry.

Thats BS - it has to be - the postman leaves stuff at my house from China all the time and I've never showed anyone a photo id to get mail delivered. . . .

I would go **** on a spark plug with the postmaster for that. . . .

This does not make any sense.

First I went looking for such a rule and could not find anything but this thread. So if someone knows it, please post.

Assuming that there is a such a rule and that the post office worker was not invoking their own rule or misunderstanding or a local guideline, what purpose does this serve? They leave the mail at your address without a photo copied license?

I can see verifying that the person picking up the package is indeed the addressee, my USPS TODAY only wanted to see an id, not take the id, not photocopy the id, just SEE, when they gave the mail, including two packages that they were holding.

I no longer use my D.L. for ID. I have other photo ID that I use. I also never let it out of my sight.

Wonder if the NSA has anyone left that still knows how to steam open letters?:goofy:
Supposedly the spy on America program digitally records every piece of mail with to/from info. If it is recorded when sorted they have no reason to copy id. Nothing they don't already know.

They get no driver license copies from me. I would demand the postmaster. Too much chance of becoming victim of identity theft.

I will show an ID - either my passport card or Global Entry card. Neither have my address, and it's much harder to use them to steal identity.

If they insist on a copy, ask them to give you a privacy act disclosure that indicates what they intend to do with the information and why.

I'd also be writing/calling my congressional/senatorial offices

The package worth about $15 from Amazon....UPS required a signature/ID.

The package worth about $300 from Amazon...UPS just leaves it on my porch.

uh???

As a merchant who sends out many a package valued between $200 - $800 to retail customers, I too am frustrated by the "left on the porch" attitude. I now pay the additional fee for delivery confirmation with a adult signature

As someone who receives a lot of deliveries and lives in a safe neighborhood where I'm not worried about my packages getting stolen, I actually prefer the package just being left by my front door. Honestly, if that wasn't done it would have been very difficult for me to receive packages prior to getting married and having a wife and baby who are home most of the day now. It always annoyed me when I needed to provide a signature.

The one exception was when I sent my Glock 30 to get repaired back at Glock. They sent it back. I specifically said I wanted it to be held at the depot to pick up. After all, it's a gun. So what do they do? Instead come around my apartment complex looking for any adult to sign for it. Sigh...

Same here... unfortunately I've had USPS, UPS and now FedEx leave them at someone ELSE'S door from time to time. Usually the same house number one or two blocks in either direction. Frustrating as hell when the tracking says it's delivered, but there's no package... and I have to hope either I can find it wherever they left it, or someone nice enough to bring it to me finds it.

I agree, just leave it, I don't have time to wait around for packages.

If you sent in a whole gun to Glock, I am amazed this didn't have to go through an FFL (unless you were in the same state).

I bought a house last Jan. The bank wanted a copy of my DL. I said no thanks. They said I can't buy the house without the copy of my DL. I asked why. They said it was for the Patriot act, to insure I wasn't a terrorist. I said, ok, I want to see a copy of the DL from everyone in the purchase chain. Sellers(bank officer), sellers agent(RE broker), Escrow officer, buyers agent, and the county recorder. They said I can't have it. I said how do I know none of you are terrorists? The Patriot act says it's a crime to do business with terrorists, and you asked me for the info. They still said no. I said cya! You can proceed with my atty(cash deposit already accepted, contract signed, cash deal). A few days later they came back and said that there was no need for the copy of the DL. My atty said they were also going to be paying for all my escrow fees as well as a nice fee.

Don't stand for it.

Yeah, I was pretty surprised about that as well. This was when I lived in Indiana, and I forget where I had to send it to. But they said to just send them the whole gun, put it in a UPS overnight box and that it was all just fine. That was 8 years ago, too.

There is an exception to the ffl requirement if it is warranty work it can go direct to the manufacturer and back to the owner.

I actually like not having carrier route delivery because it solves all those problems.

All USPS stuff goes to the post office, as does most of the UPS and FedEx stuff. And unless it's something huge, even the few things that UPS or FedEx do, in fact, attempt to deliver to my door, also wind up at the post office if I'm not around to receive them.

Whether UPS requires a signature or not depends solely on the discretion of the shipper.
The only things I tend to get that require signatures are my wine deliveries. Amusingly, they get delivered to the UPS store where some clerk signs for them. Technically, I'm supposed to sign the UPS slips when I go in, but more often than not they just hand me my boxes.

My usual reply (when annoyed) is "All I have with me is my concealed carry weapon permit."

This is why I ask for the signature service.

Which is great, until they ring the doorbell at the wrong house... or at my house, on Friday, when I'm not able to answer the door immediately but need the package before Monday.

It's not a big enough problem to take drastic steps. Mis-delivery doesn't happen often, it's just aggravating when it does.

Actually, I don't think anyone at the post office ever asked to copy my driver's license. I think they just ask to see it when it's not one of the usual people working there, and even then only if it's a package or a restricted-delivery letter (certified, etc.).

UPS and FedEx usually just drop the smaller items off at the post office. They have some sort of contract with the postal service regarding "last mile" deliveries. It works out well, actually. They do come to the house with the larger items, but they'll sometimes drop even those off at the post office if the recipient's not home and the item requires a signature.

It's all very informal. If they don't already know, they'll ask the postmaster what kind of vehicle the recipient drives and if he thinks the recipient can handle getting the package home. If so, they leave it on the dock. Obviously they don't do this with very heavy or bulky items, but they will do it with things like mail-order tires and the like.

It's probably illegal as hell to do it that way, but as long as no one complains about it, it actually makes life simpler. Everyone here visits the post office pretty much every day, so that makes as good a drop-off point as any.

EVERY time I am asked for ID, I give them that one - and they almost never realize what they are looking at or register the fact that it's not a drivers license. Of course in Texas they look nearly identical...

It's gov't-issued photo ID, which is all that's required.

Probably Georgia,

Firearms may be shipped to you if was already yours. So buy through the mail or online and it has to go to an FFL (even in state) but send your gun out for work and it can be sent directly back to you.

CPL (Concealed Pistol License) in Washington state does not have your picture on it. Otherwise, I love the idea of using that as government issued ID.

Maybe related, but I've noticed that CBP is now opening and going through boxes of personal items being shipped out of the US.

I get a large box sent ocean cargo every couple of months. When the box arrives there will be a notice the CBP has opened the box and examined the contents.

Use to be they only cared what was being shipped into the country.

CBP opening and inspecting packages leaving the country is NOT their job. They are tasked to keep America safe. A package LEAVING the country is NOT a threat to them at all..

I can't wait to hear a logical explaination for this BS..
