If you have experience with something with these specs, I'd appreciate knowing:

Everyday business printing of invoices etc at a sleepy business - ie not high volume
Laser
Copy/scanner/printer with glass bed and feeder
Duplex scanning and printing
Monochrome only
Networkable
Airprinting
Accepts 3rd party toner
Speed and capacity not important; most printers will accommodate our needs.
We are running Thinkcenter computers on a server (not Apple)
NOT HP
Budgeting $500

duplex scanning will be a tough requirement

The bigger Brother "L" series all-in-ones do duplex scanning. They make it hard to discover in their model numbering.

Here ya go. I had to wade through their specs pages. The smaller 2820 doesn't do duplex scanning but that fact is buried.

I'll second the Brother recommendation. I paid $30 for a 2 pack of replacement tonewr and never finished the first one. I was using a Brother monochrome laser all-in-one since pre-pandemic. Unfortunately it was not a network connected model. Work- and school-from-home put a lot more burden on the machine.

I eventually upgraded to and HP color all-in-one with network capability. A 4-piece CYMK set of third-party toner cartridges for it is $50. My favorite feature of it being on my home network is the ability to print directly from my phone. I do not have or need duplex in or out. Minor knock on my model HP is lack of the manual feed slot that I had on the Brother, mostly for envelopes.

I agree fully about the dual-sided scanning function; unless there is a really compelling reason to have the scanner and printer in the same device, I'd break up the functions.

Supremely happy with the quality and function of the Fujitsu ScanSnap sheetfed scanners. Fast, they just work and they scan both sides in one pass. You're unlikely to find a scanner that does dual side in one pass in a $500 multifunction device.

The Brothers are probably as good as these things get, and they're better about not going obsolete for driver non-availability whe=ile the hardware is still functional.

I have Canon 249DWs. They work nicely. And they have more "dynamic gray range" than the Brother 2820 DW which is installed on my network and is a disappointment in that regard.

Airmen frequently don't posses scanners. They take really p-poor iPhone pics or camscanner pics of their documents and it falls to me to reproduce them in small b/w format (FAA) with a fully white background. That requires that you be able to scan b/w sufficiently lightly to wipe out the gray areas and render them white.

SMALL nit. but it affects me.

As a computer tech, I recommend that anyone that needs print capability to buy a press.
