Not sure anymore
going to Memphis and haven't been for pleasure in a while. Any suggestions for food, drinks, hotel and things worth seeing?

Boscos for a beer with food, Bhan Thai if you want Thai, and the Rendezvous if you like dry rub ribs. The roof of the Peabody used to be a good place for drinks and music, not sure if it still is. I'm not much of a fan of Memphis though. I would recommend knowing where you are going before start out, it's not the safest place to get lost (or look lost). Personally, I would stay out east and avoid downtown.

What are you looking for? I work downtown but live well outside Memphis. There is lots of good food. Rendezvous is over-rated and over price IMHO. Stay between Beale Street and Madison and don't venture much past Third to the east.

Avoid Holiday Inn Select on Union. Double Tree or Peabody are good. Hampton Inn on Beale is okay, but noisy due to proximity to bars on Beale.

If you have a car, Cozy Corner on AW Willis near Danny Thomas is great BBQ but A rough looking place. INTERSTATE BBQ on Third at I-55 is good. The Flying Saucer is good for huge beer selection.

Memphis has a nice zoo, if you like zoos. Also, Bass Pro Shops in the Pyramid downtown is worth going through, as well as the Ducks Unlimited museum which is also in the Pyramid. A lot of people come to Memphis just to see Elvis Presley's Graceland, if you are an Elvis fan at all. Beale Street has a lot of music/clubs, if you like that. There is a new (not open yet, so depends on when you plan to be here) pedestrian/bike bridge over the Mississippi River attached to the old Harrahan Railroad Bridge. Once open, it will be a neat place to view the downtown skyline. If you plan to stay downtown, you can fly into West Memphis, Arkansas, (AWM) which is just across the Mississippi (6 miles or so) from downtown. West Memphis has Southland Greyhound Racetrack, which also has slot machines, if you like to gamble. If you want to stay in east Memphis, Olive Branch, Mississippi airport would be a better choice.

Love Boscos! I lived not too far from Boscos in midtown when I was in Memphis. Went there quite a bit.

Rendezvous is meh.

Best BBQ (hands down) is at the Memphis BBQ Company (Horn Lake, MS), close second is the Germantown Commissary. Rendezvous, Corky's, Stateline... all overrated.

Cooper-Young area for cool hip place with some nice restaurants and bars.

Also, watch the movie Hustle and Flow before you come down. Twice.

Yep the Commissary is pretty darn good. I also ate at the Cozy Corner a few times and really liked it.

I agree that "Rendezvous is over-rated and over price IMHO" and also agree that Interstate BBQ is very good. I also like Mud Island where there is a scale model of the Mississippi River that you can walk along.

1. Agree Rendezvous sucks, plus you're in a basement with only one exit...major code violation...made me extremely uncomfortable...I asked to be moved to a table was right next to the door after I sat down and surveyed the situation. (That's been a dozen years ago so maybe this has changed).

2. Interstate BBQ is pretty good. (And I'll second Sluggo's recommendation for Memphis BBQ Co down at Southaven)

3. Folks Folly is great.

4. Owen Brennan's is pretty good.

5. Be careful, Memphis is a truly dangerous town. I spent LOTS of time there when I was with FedEx. Saw a lot of good...far more bad.

But maybe most importantly!

6. Never stay at any of the hotels at I-55 and Goodman Road in Southaven. There's a cluster of them there; Hampton, Fairfield, Residence Inn, Courtyard, etc. It's a really nice area but if the winds are out of the south then your sleep will abruptly end about 3am. A FedEx jet will be passing just overhead about every 45 seconds for a couple of hours (or at least it'll seem like it!). BTDT...never again.

Wow, I didn't know the Rendezvous was so despised. It is the one place that I try to eat at whenever I am in Memphis. I love the dry rub ribs, don't care much for their sides. I do agree it's overpriced but the ribs are something I haven't found anywhere else. I've even had them FedEx'd to me a couple of times.
