What's the deal with the East Coast and West Coast having their news at 11pm vs. 10pm here in the Central states??

Personally, I think 11pm is WAY to late for news as most people I know are asleep by then.

Is it Big City vs Country thinking or is there more to it?

I know programming is delayed for the West Coast because of the time zone issue.

10p news is too close to the 6p news. Make it an hour later and BAM, chicken fries.

We still have 5, 6 and 10pm news here. It is all mostly from the national news in the past 7 days... So it doesn't make much difference..

We have two TV stations owned by the same parent company who merged their news departments and do a 4 and 5, go to national news at 6 on one station while doing another local re-hash on the station that started at 4, and then do 9, and 10. Which pretty much means if you can flip on a TV at the top of any of those hours, you'll have the day's headlines done in about 5 minutes.

Andrew,

Everything is an hour later than here on the east coast because they're an hour ahead of us...all prime time programs are on an hour later because they're actually broadcast at the same time.

I think all programming is an hour earlier in mountain time.

Then there's the west coast. There is no explanation. :)

Gotta go to bed early to do the farm chores in the flyover States. :)

That comment was always quite funny to hear on West Wing. Especially when they were talking to someone from "there"

Now Tim don't let people believe your all fancy living on the East Coast. We all know you love your backwoods deliverance location. :D:rofl:

Not always. Depends on the show. Live shows like awards shows and sporting events get weird.

Wikipedia has a ridiculously detailed article on it.

Good GOD man!!!!! I about fell asleep reading that Wikipedia article. Someone needs to break it down into smaller sections.

It's all a matter of the rest of prime time television. All the networks other than Fox run to 11 EST so that's when the local news runs. Back in the old days they had really only two feeds east and west so Central time got their shows an hour earlier (coincident with the east coast time). Same held true for HBO (there was a west coast feed that was delayed 3 hours from the east coast feed, everybody else had to adjust their program guides).

Living in Colorado for a year I learned two things:

1. People tended to go to bed earlier. I mean, once prime time TV is over, what's the point of staying up :)
2. New Years Eve they watch a tape delay of what went on in Times Square two h ours earlier.

I noticed that after moving to Colorado too, since I grew up in Eastern Time and then moved to Pacific Time before coming here. Even office hours are somewhat different. On the west coast most places start a 9 but around here they seem to start at 8.

So for you guys living on the east coast, I am in Alaska, 4 hours behind you. Please don't tell me what the future is like, I would rather find out for myself....:lol::lol:

Get this. Most network news here in TX start at 10pm (primetime).
Fox was greedy and jumped ahead and started showing their news at 9pm.
What the damn rednecks didn't realize was that most people don't want their news earlier, they want them when they're used to them, which is 10pm.
So since Fox jumped the shark, they realized that they didn't want to lose the 10pm slot and now show news at 10pm. But they didn't want to lose the 9pm slot either (dumba** bastards) so they show news for 1.5 hours now. Same BS over and over. So the local Fox channel has been rendered useless for 90 minutes at night. Go rednecks!

Not Fox. The original Metromedia television network was an "also ran" compared to the big three (ABC, NBC, CBS) and brought the local news an hour earlier as a differentiator. The Fox Broadcast Network was founded in the US by buying up the Metromedia TV outlets (other than WCVB in Boston).

I always liked that the "Late Late Show" wasn't that late here. Craig Ferguson was a funny dude. Did he ever get his pilot's license? He talked about working on it often.
