This year especially has been immensely hectic and we have all generally been exhausted at work. I mean, serious signs of over-work. (No, it's not just age; I have production numbers to prove it. :D )
So, the question arose in my mind yesterday, when we closed for the rest of the week...how to use this time.

Yes obviously if you need rest, get it...BUT
-there is a huge backlog of paperwork and yardwork and maintenance/repairs that desperately need attention. Not doing anything for 4 days means serious pain next week.

I could force myself to read, rest, stare out at the snowstorm.. but after a while that drives me bananas and my body starts to rebel.

I could just push through, and knock out a bunch of tasks - get a good rest on Sunday and hope for the best. Sometimes I think it is better to keep on working, I feel worse when I "stop and go, stop and go".

I know if I do a little of both (rest and task-completion) I will feel successful at neither.

What works best for you?

Bust a** early in the morning and get our stuff done so we can chillax in the afternoon.

Dave: I can sympathize with you. I typically put in about 330 days a year at work, and am on the overnight shift. I usually put in a couple of hours when I get home in the mornings on the highest priority, noise generating type work and try and save all the quiet inside work for bad weather/off days. When I'm off, I can't easily flop to a daytime schedule, so I end up keeping normal for me hours. I use the quiet hours to handle paperwork, benchwork, writing, ect. that won't wake the family or the neighbors.

I had planned to take off this year from Dec 11th until Jan 3, but ended up going back to work the 20th so I could get some regular sleep. Will have to suffer thru being off now until we resume production Jan 3rd.

Plan one reasonable task for each morning - in writing
As soon as task done it is do what ever hits your fancy :D

Fixed for ya!

At times like that I get up early and kick tail, but plan to be off the clock by 3pm or so. Get a nice shower, a cold beer, a good dinner, and enjoy the evening

Hookers-n-blow

(yes, filling in for Henning)

Flew Mes. Steingar for the first time in the Mooney yesterday, cooked breakfast this morning (fried eggs and home fried potatoes) and am cooking for a friend who's wife was just in hospital.

Flying is the only activity that seems to recharge my batteries. Only in the sky can I escape from the tyranny of petty things.

Even though I rarely get a day off, I try to fit flying in 2 or 3 days each week. It works for me.

Needs of the body won this time. Have done minimal non-essential work in last 4 days. Expecting pain next week.

Same here... Weather is not looking good for the week either... I guess I picked the wrong to take off from work... The plan was to fly fly fly...:mad2: I hate it when life gets in the way of fun:yes:

I went through the "spin cycle" at work for years to keep the wheels on the business... Then I realized working for some one else will get you NO where....

Been my own boss for 25 years, and I determine when I need rest / break etc etc....

I have grown a business where my clients/ customers need me, more then I need them... And they will wait for me when break time is over...

Life is good in Paradise...:yes::):)

My partners and I no longer work our business. After 31DEC15 we will just meet once per quarter for board meetings.

As of last March I no longer fly in my company. I am currently looking for a flying job to find a cure for boredom. I may even go back to Alaska for another summer job.

Life is very good in paradise.. :):):)

Wow..!!!! That is awesome..!!!!

Just what I hope to find to retire at.

I know what you're saying. When we have a 3 or 4-day weekend and I have things I need to do I make my main goal to relax. Watch tv, read, spend time w/ the family. Then take a break from that and enjoy putting in just a little time on the tasks that need to be done.

My daughter got a rearview camera for her car for Christmas, so yesterday, after sleeping in, I watched a little tv, then went out in the garage and installed it. Took about an hour or so. Then pestered the kids, but they didn't want to play so I put new brake pads on my truck. Kind of kept me amused and still got some work done.

I think a lot of us call things like that work, but we'd really rather be doing work/chores than most other things. Dad is almost 80, retired 3 years ago, and still invents work to be done. It's fun to watch now and help him out. Not so much when I was 14 and was an unwilling participant of much of the work he invented to be done.
