We are building a house and got into a pickle..while our contractor was cleaning up he hit the front porch concrete and busted a little chunk out with his bobcat. This chunk isn't overly big but it is right on the walk up edge and centered in the door way. It is unsightly to say the least.

He said he did it and said he can patch it but is not sure how it will look and told me to look at it and see what I think.

So..it is ugly and not happy with it. Patching it will stand out like a sore thumb. what can be done and what can my expectations be for this?I originally thought to have him tile the whole porch to cover it but that honestly seems like a big expense for what it is and alot of cost that i don't see him wanting to do, nor do I expect that . Any ideas what I can and should expect?

Post a picture. Concrete can be patched quite easily and you can always paint over it to make it unnoticeable.

I'll get a picture of it today...don't want to paint it though. Did consider stain...

Yes, pics would help since all we have to go on is "...he hit the front porch concrete and busted a little chunk out with his bobcat..."

What part of the "porch" was it? "Walk up edge" really doesn't help at all.

Porch slab was poured with house slab. that would be a huge project that might make things worse.

Planning for a new log home next year. Can't wait for all the fun times Simtech! Thanks a lot. ;):)

Gotta do that thing with your phone so he can't see who the call is coming from. Funny how contractors ALWAYS answer their phone BEFORE they have your money !

Building a custom home is fun yet stressful at the same time. I'm ready for it to be finished though that's for sure!

stain (might still be noticeable), coating, or cementious overlay (maybe an 1/8-1/4") are a few ways to cover the patch. you could also do a thin stone overlay, I like slate myself.

I feel your pain. Finally moved into mine January 2015. It's great to be done, but DAMN that was a painful process!!

Here are the pics...looking at it I may suggest cutting off 3" all the way across to get rid of it. patching I beleive will look ugly...to tile the whole thing would be unfair to ask that I beleive...we will see but this is what we are dealing with.

Also keep in mind a side walk will be going up to it as well.

No biggie, get a grinder and taper it back yo make a wheelchair ramp type easement. Two birds one stone.

Or just put a big rug over it.

I'm likely the first contractor to comment here.

Oh...one thing I will say...

If he did that with a bobcat then that's either:

1) some very soft concrete.
or
2) one wide open...overly reckless contractor.

Either way, you're screwed!

If it were me I would consider it fair for the contractor to patch it and cover the porch with outdoor carpet and only charge for his cost of the material.

Outdoor carpet?! hahahahaha no thanks.

Thought about cutting off 3"..I think I mentioned that a few post back. contractor said we can brick it or tile it. He will stand by it!

Then brick or tile it. Problem solved.

But use tile that isn't slick as owl snot when it gets wet. ;)

Yeah I was thinking that'd be a little too tacky, especially the front entrance. I know my spouse would not go along with that. But hey, Zeldman's in Alaska, probably ok there. No offense Zeld.

Does he have liability insurance? If so it should be fully covered.
It is possible to saw a piece of concrete out and pour a new one? With straight seams and good workmanship it will look good. Make the seams look like planned expansion joints if possible. Might not be perfect, but it will be servicable and be ok.

If you already paid him, you might be screwed.

I'd just patch it, and tile over, I've always liked a nice stone tile over concrete, looks more fished IMO.

On his dime ofcourse.

Brick will look nicer than plain ole concrete.

What is it 4" deep? Get a Concrete wet-saw and cut the 4"s off the whole porch gaining a new, clean edge.
