[N/A] Rear Mounted Light Bars

That's what shoulders are for. Or exit/entry ramps. I have used those a couple times to pass two vehicles hat will not leave each others' sides.

A good recipe to nail a guy who is emptying his mailbox or a bicyclist. If you are lucky it's just a $250 ticket.

I have yet to see a mailbox or bicyclist on the interstate. Andrew and I were talking interstates.

Reading, it's fun when you do it.

2. The "Speed Limit is Too Fast and Scary" guys. These guys are terrifying, since they are often impaired by age or substances. They will go 5 under the speed limit, and slow down whenever the road turns or oncoming traffic is present.

And, of course, they speed up in the passing zones.

They brake on every curve no matter how shallow of a curve. I hate when you try to pass them and they speed up because they don't want to be passed. I call it the "yo-yo effect".

An LS engine solves that issue. ;)

I'm no spring rooster but nothing worries me more than some gray-haired granny in a Buick who can't see over the steering wheel. They are too unpredictable. and should no longer e driving.

I stopped letting my grandmother drive with me in the car after she turned the wrong direction and found herself on the interstate thinking it was her parking lot in a horrible downpour.

The 630 interstate use to end at a four way intersection so it was very easy to find yourself on the interstate.

WRT 2-lane roads, there are two types of road jerks here in South Texas.

1. The "Any Speed But Yours" guys. You can be going 15 over the speed limit, and they will still come zooming up on your bumper, because their only speed reference is the guy ahead of them.

2. The "Speed Limit is Too Fast and Scary" guys. These guys are terrifying, since they are often impaired by age or substances. They will go 5 under the speed limit, and slow down whenever the road turns or oncoming traffic is present.

And, of course, they speed up in the passing zones.

There is also a subset of this latter group that aren't impaired in any way. These are the guys who get their rocks off by looking in the mirror and seeing a snake of 15 cars behind them. These were the kids who were bullied in junior high, and are now getting back at the world in the only way they can. For them, it's about control.

I would support the death penalty for this latter group. They cause more accidents than the statistics reflect, and probably laugh about it.

Can't forget the folks who NEED to pass you, but once they get ahead of you they revert to their natural speed... which is under what your cruise has been set to the entire time.

Or tailgaters, there is ZERO reason to EVER do it, it's dangerous and it's also going to jack up the paint and glass on the tailgaters car, it's like a huge sign stating that the driver is a idiot, personally I don't like to be any closer then 3 seconds to the car in front of me, I'm also not rich enough to be constantly having my car repainted and glass replaced, that and I have seen what happens to people who crash, no bueno

Then why not say that to begin with rather than being absurd?

Oh yeah, reading comprehension, nevermind.

Even so, you don't pass blind. Pretty easy to see a mile down the shoulder if you don't have your head up your ass.

Exactly. Not that I pass on the shoulder but your statement is exactly what I was thinking while reading Weilke's post

I've passed on the shoulder one time in my life, and it was a couple of "we're going to enforce the speed limit" cars side-by-side on a 4-lane divided highway with a nasty tornado/hail laden t-storm bearing down from the west (I was headed south). I was in my truck and could see over the two cars which had been playing their game for 10 miles. I put it in 4WD and used the shoulder, which provided a light peppering of the offenders' vehicles with pea-gravel as I passed by. I noticed in the rear-view that the left-lane moron decided it was better to get over and let the 20 cars behind him go by.

I chuckled at them flashing their high beams at me after I was already past them, like that was going to make me reconsider my actions, lol.

I've actually never passed on the shoulder but I have used the off ramp lane to pass and merged over the "triangle" into the on-ramp in order to pass as well when the "drag racers" stay neck and neck for more than a mile.

Fair warning, if you visit CO, our cops here park in the triangle to give speeding tickets and to catch people doing exactly what you're doing.

Personally I don't care if you do it, just fair warning if you visit. You would get nailed. They especially like ones that are slightly over a hill.

Speaking of nailed, I saw a small car get nailed by a cement truck because he got impatient and passed on the shoulder. In fact he was so impatient he hit the accelerator and lost control because he didn't realize his right wheels were in the dirt. The shoulder wasn't quite that wide. That's the last impatient act he ever did.

Aggressive driving has consequences.
So does over-reacting to aggression.
Possibly even fatal consequences, in both cases.

Stop yourself, before you post "who is in the right"
There could be more at stake than just being 'right or wrong'.

People confuse me so badly. I really wish we could have a civil conversation and get to the root of it.

This morning I was behind someone, not keeping up with the flow of traffic. One person pulls out in front of them, they hang for a while, then fall back to five-under. Another person pulls out in front of them, they hang for a while, then fall way back again.

I passed them, not going more than five over, and in a legal passing lane... and I get the brights? Why? Why is it offensive to have faster traffic move by in a legal and orderly fashion?

And as is easily predicted, after passing, they hang on my bumper for a while, until they "forget why they're mad at me", then fall back to their comfortable "five under", and they fall way back and I never see them again.

The other "happens every single time and I don't get it", is when passing slower traffic, why do they speed up? I can be behind someone going five under, go to pass, and notice by the time I move back over, we're both going way faster, and now they're hanging with me, barely giving room to move back over. Why? If someone moves to pass me, I bias away from them, and hold my speed or slow down slightly.

I don't tailgate, that's rude. I try to be courteous.

Sooooo confused...

'A mile', and you are talking about absurd.

Just from this morning, one county over:

On March 14, 2016 at 6:32 am, Troopers from the Maryland State Police Leonardtown Barrack responded to a motor vehicle collision on Maryland Route 234, Budd’s Creek Road, at Maryland Route 236, Thompson Corner Road, Mechanicsville, St. Mary’s County, Maryland. Investigation revealed that a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado driven by William K. Halt, Jr., 41, of Mechanicsville, was travelling east on Budd’s Creek Road. A vehicle in front of the Silverado stopped to make a left hand turn from Budd’s Creek Road onto Thompson’s Corner Road. The Silverado attempted to pass the vehicle on the right and subsequently struck a pedestrian.

The pedestrian, who has not been identified at this time, was pronounced deceased at the scene of the collision. The collision is currently under investigation by TFC W. Scarlett. (16-MSP-010186)

I wonder what this driver thought about his skill seeing obstacles on the shoulder until 6:31 this morning.

I must admit, there is one time I'll tailgate and tailgate with a vengeance. And flash my bright lights if it's night. And it's as follows:

So, I'm cruising down a country two lane highway (around here, it's hilly so passing opportunities can be scarce) and there's absolutely no one else around. No one in front of me and, more importantly, no one behind me.

I have my cruise set on about 5 to 7 over the limit (55 mph around here).

A vehicle comes pulling up to the highway on a side road and pulls out right in front of me. By "right in front of me" I mean I have to lay on the brakes in order to not rear end them.

Then...

Then...

...they proceed to accelerate to 5 to 10 mph below the posted speed limit and cruise there...45 to 50 mph.

Hey, if you aren't in a hurry to get anywhere then why the f*** did you have to pull out right in front of me instead of waiting until I passed?

That almost always elicits the bright lights and tailgating until the next passing zone. Well, of course unless it's a cop. They REALLY like to do that around here to see what kind of a reaction they will get.

Left hand turns on the interstate?

INTERSTATE.

Say it with me...
INNNNN TERRRR STAAAAATE.
We are not talking driveways, two lane roads, or anything else that isn't an interstate.
You know, those limited access highways that don't have turns, don't have driveways, don't have stop signs, don't have pedestrians and all the traffic is moving the same direction...
No, of course you don't know what they are because if you did, you wouldn't be posting these idiotic anecdotes.
Are you naturally ignorant or trying real hard to be so?

I have observed this behavior myself, and have a theory about it; so many people are driving these days in a distracted state, most commonly because of texting, Facebook and, etc. It is even worse for those who are holding the phone to their ear and talking.

It is while driving in this distracted manner that they go into a reduced-intelligence autopilot mode, and they have what I call "surface tension," such that, if they are near or next to another vehicle, they tend to unconsciously match its speed as it speeds up and slows down. Likewise, when someone passes by them, they temporarily change their state of consciousness, and either adhere to the passing vehicle, or try to punish it. I honestly don't think most of these people realize what they're doing, although I am confident they believe themselves to be exquisite and wonderful drivers (99% of us are!).

It is for this reason that, when I am in a position of passing someone, I tend to do it with fairly determined movements, not signaling to change lanes to go around until I'm ready to execute the maneuver, executing immediately upon signaling, accelerating aggressively to get past them, and pointedly returning to the lane from which I started with signal. In addition, I tend to keep a little extra speed on until I have broken the link, so to speak, with the vehicle I just passed, so they're less likely to cling to me. This last part is a lot easier to do in my wife's BMW, than it is in my Suburban; while it is far from the fastest car on the road, the BMW is very peppy, and easily walks away from the majority of cars on the road (and does so solidly and with great stability).

YOU may be talking about the interstate, but the first person who mentioned people lined up behind him was denverpilot (Nate) who was talking about traffic in his subdivision.

Earlier I gave you examples of people killing others who happened to be in the breakdown lane of an interstate. That didn't get through to you either.

It doesn't matter whether you are on a local road or limited access highway, there is plenty of stuff to hit while passing in a non-driving lane. This mornings death just happened to be on a state highway.

Add when I bring up visibility on the interstate and people having their head up their ass, you go back and post about a non-interstate road. Might as well post about a guy hitting a tree on an ATV.

I have Nate on ignore, I can't see anything he says or if he's quoted. I was also specific about talking only about the interstate with Andrew, when derka derka chimes in with irrelevant examples, and keeps posting non-interstate examples. Like I have to worry about joggers on the interstate where the visibility is WAY better than some side road before the sun is up.

Ah, got it. You can always see everything ahead on the interstate, so this could never happen to you.

You can't blame others if you are not reading the whole conversation.

Only issue with shoulders is that around here they are not very clean. Very often there full of blown trucker tires and other random debris.

The other issue is that it is illegal in some states (it is in California.) There is a specific VC against passing on the shoulder, but I've seen reckless tickets get issued for it.

When I'm being quoted, I don't need to read the rest of the conversation, since I was blatantly not addressing that portion of it and was specific I was only talking interstates with Andrew. He would have been just as well off posting about boating accidents to make his (non) point.

Tailgating really is a sign of pure stupidity

I did say I have never passed on the shoulder, but used the entry/exit lanes as passing lanes. Downshift into 3rd, and I'm around them in less than 2 seconds.

That would be fair game. In fact, here (but pretty much not in any other state) you could use the right side of the lane if you wanted to, if it was wide enough to accommodate the traffic. For the same reason you could legally do it on a motorcycle.

When I passed on the shoulder, I had visibility over the offending vehicle and could see the clear shoulder for well over a mile at that point. The likelihood of of hitting a pedestrian on I-35E south of the Arbuckles is about nil.

Which, if you are going to do it, is the way to safely do it.

Just watch out for the new mailboxes they put up on the interstates. Evidently that's all the rage in some places.

LOL! I had the opposite tonight. Some doofus in a jeep blows past all in a hurry wanting to do 20 over, using Ed's turn lane technique, rushes up to the next car in front of me about 20 yards ahead, and then happily sits there behind THAT car even when real passing lanes appeared in the next 1/4 mile.

He about lost it at the end of the turn lane, being he apparently didn't realize Jeeps have a high center of gravity and all, and that particular turn lane ends in gravel which is has for oh, about a decade there since it was first built.

I was doing 50 in a 50 and it's a dark paved two lane for miles and miles with plenty of passing markings, where appropriate, and they're not that far apart. Also has a stop light every two or three miles. And at that time of night it's (for whatever reason) nearly impossible to catch them green. Mostly I think because they're sensor tripped for the side streets, not timed.

Oh and of course, time/speed/distance and all, ends up right in front of me at the next stop light. Going the same zero MPH everyone else is.

Smile and wave at the azzhat in his rear view.

People are idiots. I just set the cruise and watch them try to kill themselves in old and not that creative ways.

Happens more often in the Subaru. I never get passed in the dually. People are freaked out by an extra tire on the rear axle I guess. Yawn.

Can't forget the folks who NEED to pass you, but once they get ahead of you they revert to their natural speed... which is under what your cruise has been set to the entire time.

The only ones more annoying than that bunch are the slow drivers whom you legally pass; but who then speed up up, pass you, and slow down again in front of you, often accompanied by a self-satisfied smirk that says, "Ha! I'm in front of you again!" I only come across that type once or twice a year, and I really don't understand them. Even aside from speculation about what weird mental disturbances underlie their bizarre behavior, one has to wonder how these people manage to get through their day-to-day lives if they insist on driving slowly but also hate being passed.

Close behind them (see what I did there?) in terms of puzzlement are the ones who will tailgate, flash their lights, blare their horns, and bare their digits at drivers in front of them in the right lane who are driving too slowly for their liking, when a perfectly good left lane is available for their passing pleasure. I don't understand that bunch, either. I always suspect extreme self-centeredness bordering on sociopathy. They want to do what they want to do, and they consider even having to changing lanes to be an intolerable imposition.

Other than not driving while impaired, I've become persuaded that observing the three-second rule is the simplest and most effective way to dramatically reduce your chances of being in an accident. Most people up here religiously observe it, probably because of the deer. We're lousy with deer. Having to suddenly brake to avoid hitting another vehicle that suddenly braked to avoid a suicidal deer is a very common thing.

The problem with the three second rule in this area is that three seconds is considered enough time for someone to pull out in front of you if on a two-lane road, and enough for 3 cars to wedge in there when on the interstates or other 4 lane divided highways.

In my corner of Michigan if you leave a three second gap, three cars will fill it. God, I hate the Detroit area freeways.

Rich, tailgaters on an uncrowded interstate (aka those who have never heard of the three second rule) really get me going. I like to see how slow I can get them to drive, by slowing down about 5mph/minute and they slow down accordingly. Finally they wake up and blast by.

It seems as if the best drivers to slow way down are those with another occupant in the car, engaged in an animated conversation. My record is 35 mph in a 65 zone.
