Our new to us Saratoga, undergoing annual inspection maintenance activities ... from our Maintenance officer ...

"... noticed the right wheel bearing nut was not tight enough. Closer exam: bearing install parts missing: an axle bushing, washer, grease seal, and snap ring. We have not serviced this wheel since purchase... it was delivered this way from XXXXXXXXX Piper Service Center. The other wheel has a noisy bearing."

then

"The missing axle spacer, RH landing gear has been found — on the LEFT axle. TWO of them were where ONE should be. Still need the grease seal parts for the right side. (A&P) won’t sign off the annual until we get them. When I removed the LEFT wheel, a brake leak became obvious. Fixed that. Put the wheel back with ONE .153” spacer on the inside, the bigger one on the outside, and correctly installed the axle nut which had been installed wrong side out. "

Wow, some mechanic has been smoking too much weed on the job....

That's a real basic newbie error. Is this the same guy that didn't notice the sheared rivets on the nosegear?

Just to be clear - the reports are from our MO who is going thru this new to us airplane we bought thru a Piper facility ... we bought these problems and are working thru them. Our MO is a good mech.

Oh! Then he's not playing by the rules. If there's a discrepancy, then the FAA says sign off on the annual inspection completed, list of discrepancies furnished to owner. Then the annual is done. The discrepancy can be resolved by any mechanic, don't need an IA for that.

We have a very good working relationship with our IA on the field and do as much as legally allowed maintenance and annuals on our aircraft. I edited the original post before putting it up, removing his name since it wasn't relevant to the topic. I'm not sure how him telling us "finish this, I'll inspect and sign off when done" is not playing by the rules?

No prebuy eh?

We didn't pay for a pre-buy ... this was a very quick purchase and, in spite of this discrepancy, we believe we still got a VERY good deal on this purchase by being able to move quickly on the purchase.

Man, without a prebuy I'd only pay scrap value, shy of me personally being familiar with that aircraft.

Hope you luck out on this one, for sure a roll of the dice.

You bought it that way? it's on you.

Absolutely no disagreement there, Tom. Never was a question about "who can we make responsible for this." We're making it right and flying it. Does make one a little more leery about "what else could be wrong that should have been easy".
