I know there is another thread, or two, talking about Microsoft Flight Simulator but I couldn't find all of them so I started this thread in the hope that all the information can be easily found in the future. Mods, if you want to delete this that's OK.

There was supposed to be an update released last week and they pushed it to next week but this video does a great job laying out the timeline as to what's ahead in the development cycle. Microsoft video about airports should be out next week but until then...

Lots of threads about it. There's some Alpha leaked footage out there to.

All I know is the graphics are stupendous, and you either need a high speed internet connection and a monthly subscription or 2 Pentabytes of storage. A pentabyte is 1000 Terabytes! I think you also need Windows 10.

It looks like X-Box will also be a platform you can use.

Pretty sure scenery detail is not a necessary part of the decision process for issuing an LOA for a BATD... If it were, then my TD2 would not qualify. Sure, it beats MSFS 95, but not by much. :p

There is much more to being an approved simulator than just the software. It’s the total package of the software and the hardware combined. Redbird uses P3D, an updated version of MSFS X. They get the BATD or AATD LOAs for one configuration and build identical configurations under the same LOA. I could build a sim using XPlane 11 and go through the same hoops to get the LOA.

The release of the IFR video has been pushed back to the end of March so that it can be swapped out with the Multiplayer video. That should come out on March 13th or so. Seems there was more demand for that module.

I would really like to have this right now! I have been simming since the early 90's and have never been this excited about a release. If they can do the things they are advertising it's going to be a game changer.

How much of it is done in USA? It seems like all / most is developed by Asobo Studio and we no longer have the capacity to write code any longer, we gave most of our production to China now we are giving our software developing to others. Yes, I know it's less expensive, that's exactly how the retarded CEOs started with the production and assembly lines 25 years ago.
It is disappointing to see that they are prioritizing the game aspect, multi player, and having the IFR code on back burner.
I've been in the simulators, and Real world flying, since 1976 and never had the need, or used, multi player a complete waste of time and effort in my opinion. I hope someone will analyze the direction and refocus their priorities.

I've given up on flight sims. Drivers and hardware go out of date so fast. Operating systems are not backward compatible, wifi problems, shaky unrealistic controls. I've finally quit trying to keep it working. The PC is going to the recycler. All computing will be done on a Macbook Pro till it gets too old to run the lates iOS.

Lol, it’s a PC game, not a certified flight instruction system. Getting paying customers largely means attracting young adults by selling the multiplayer modes and incorporating “challenges” into the game. I’m sure you can fly IFR approaches to your heart’s content. Plenty of Live ATC incorporated into prior models to try and make it like “the real thing”.

I don't know if Microsoft will displace Xplane or not. I hope it will be better than Xplane. My biggest frustration with Xplane has been how inflexible it is for setting up cockpit panels. It seems easier to rewire a real cockpit panel than to figure out how to move an instrument on the Xplane.

I don’t even try. Biggest struggle is most planes have ADF but not DME. I know you can fake it with the Garmin but it’s just annoying. Not sure how flexible the new MS sim will be. I do know I will be purchasing it. Really it looks pretty good in the video previews. And hopefully missions are developed also. I enjoyed MSFX for that reason alone.

I have no doubt it will be better than XPlane in most areas. XP only exists today as a function of MSFS leaving the market, so they had little competition. If FS2020 is anything like the previews, you'll get a ton of people that move over just to have the "newest/best", and a good group of others who jump over on the potential for the expansion of realism (assuming MS coding does a decent job of replicating aircraft controls/response coding).

There's always FSX:SE (Steam Edition) for the recreational flight simmers. Prepar3d has the educational, professional, and commercial areas of FSX sewn up.

Prepar3D V4 is their first 64bit offering. Scenery addons are widely available, but flight models essentially have to be revisited because of 64bit incompatibilities.

I've been using Xplane for many years, but honestly I am surprised why it is so popular given how sloppy its back end functions are. Austin seems to have milked this 'blade element theory'. Honestly I think it is a bit gimmicky, and I don't see anything wrong with a lookup table model. The whole point of a sim is to emulate your real airplane. If I can't edit and re-arrange the cockpit, I don't really care if it uses blade element theory or something else. Once you start digging into how Xplane's cockpit objects are connected to datarefs, you find out that it is a complete mess. All I wanted to do was to switch the positions of GNS430 and the GNS530 on the default C-172. I've been looking into that for over a year now. No useful response yet on the Xplane forum, and many have indicated that it is impossible to do. Xplane's planemaker is a useless software that no one has used since 2010.

I’ve been using X-Plane with an Oculus Rift S the last few days.

While not perfect. It definitely takes the realism up a notch or two. You do feel like you are sitting in the cockpit. You can learn cockpit layouts, where switches are, etc.

It’s also a heck of a lot of fun flying fighters too and just messing around. :)

I realized the other day the last time I tried xplane vr was with my old 1080. Fired it up tonight with the 2080 and tried to fly the 172RG around with just the oculus touch controllers but quickly realized it isn't VR friendly. Flew the S76 around some instead, now it has me looking at helicopter flight controls  Need to do some setting optimization to get it running better but overall it's ok. I'm still rocking an original Rift so the resolution "sucks." Waiting on the next gen headsets to upgrade it.

Microsoft will miss this perfect window to release the new flight simulator. By the time it hits the selves, no one will want to sit in front of a comp

You may be right. The flip side is that right now is probably a really bad time to burden the Internet with even higher bandwidth needs from the large amounts of scenery data FS 2020 will need.

Laminar, makers of x-plane, is in a similar situation with a major update that will (should) improve the smoothness of their simulator with their move to a new graphics rendering engine - Vulkan. It should eliminate the bad stuttering people get and should help improve FPS for all users including VR users like me.

They have a really good opportunity to release it to a captive, at home audience right now. But they keep delaying the release.... it is driving me nuts. I use x-plane to keep myself in the flying mode when I can't fly. It's not perfect, but their 172 with a few mods is pretty close. With the scenery add-ons I have, I can fly VFR flights that replicate the real thing pretty closely.

It's also fun to get into the A321 and go from cold-dark to shut down on a virtual flight somewhere warm when we can't fly for vacations in real life anymore... honestly, xplane is kind of keeping me sane right now with all this other bad stuff going on. The ability to put on a VR headset and transport you into something you love doing is pretty neat.

If you want a VR challenge try landing on top of Mount Whitney in CA. Take off from Lone Pine O26 fly around 270 and follow the Road / Hiking trail climb to around 15K and go around the back. If you can land and want to Take off again make sure you turn toward a heading of around 045, as you see the pic otherwise you will not be able to go up / forward again. You can glide back, see the Road / Trail, if you can manage to take off from the top.
Be cautious to the feeling of vertigo as you drop down over the edge, it can be intense and difficult for some people.
Try get the z_ortho_California_v5, z_ortho_CA_San_Franciso_HD and zzz_uhd_global_scenery4 for best views, it will work with default also.

It will be interesting to see what the Asobo team is capable of. MSFSX is still very good, as is, in many respects still better than XP, and all they needed to do is improve the scenery and catch up with the latest technology.
They seem to want to reinvent the wheel and it looks like they are behind their own schedule already. I hope I am wrong.
