I am a student and have applied for a 3rd class medical. The examiner deferred me to the FAA because I am far sighted in my right eye. I wear one contact lense to correct this. I received a letter from the FAA today stating that my right eye is 'not useful' and I must provide a current eye evaluation from my family optometrist which must include bilateral Humphrey visual field testing.

Should I proceed at this point or hang it up?

Thanks,

Jimmy

Oh this is easy. Appointment at ophthalmologist (not Optometrist), FAA form 8500-7, formal Humphrey 24-2 visual fields (each eye separately). Send them in, get invited to ride with an FAA safety Inspector.

Consider it an opportunity to fly with a high time pilot.

Thank you. I will go this route.

(near sided in one eye, far sided in the other)
I don't mean to be pedantic, but I figure that you'll be filling out some paperwork during this process. It's "nearsighted" and "farsighted".

Nearsighted means that you can't focus on objects at a distance. Farsighted means you can't focus on object close to you.

I will state that if this is correctable with lenses (and it is) it is absolutely stupid for the FAA to even defer it. Test your eyes with correction, get a medical.

Thank you. I stand corrected.
