McDonnell 220 bizjet promo film - 1963

I called McDonnell to order one but no one answered my call. F-3s and looks like the F-4 prototype in the background at 3:35.

It used to be for sale on Controller years ago. Think it had an orange rudder at the time. Would love to see it get restored into flying condition.

The dude who narrates like everything in the 60s either died rich or had the mother of all drug habits.

I bet that baby could chug some fuel.

[Plano Pilot]

If I remember right it is out at KELP.

[Lance F]

The film promised fan engines which might have made fuel consumption barely tolerable (Center, how fast can you clear us to FL450?). Wonder if they ever got such engines on it?

[Let'sgoflying!]

What airplane out-compete it?

[Pilawt]

Lockheed JetStar was a moderately-successful (204 built), four-engine bizjet of similar size.

[Lance F]

Further investigation showed McDonnell only flew the one and didn’t change the engines. That project was a big money loser. But at least they tried.

Looks like a mini B-58 Hustler!

The FAA Registry shows N4AZ, McDonnell 220 Serial No. 1 has a valid registration, airworthiness classification Experimental, category "To show compliance with FAR", whatever that means. Owner address is in Phoenix, AZ.

It had a 4 minute flight in December, 2017, departing and arriving KVNY, Van Nuys.

A little doesn't it? Except for the wing.

Looks like a mini B-58 Hustler!

Wonder if it had the clamshell ejection system.

Cheers

My hangar neighbor owns it, it’s for sale or I think maybe donation.

Sounds like the perfect move up to a jet from that slow, small MU2 for Ted and Cloud9
