The FAA announced yesterday it is “accelerating the modernization” of its Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) service. The new service is set to go into operation this year. According to the agency, it used “a streamlined, innovative vendor challenge to cut through red tape to get this critical work done as fast as possible.”

Wonder if they included input from pilots....

What does modernization mean exactly? Are we talking about server/infrastructure upgrades or are we talking about improving the actual NOTAMs to be more useful?

I'm going to guess it's infrastructure or process improvements and not content based on this message from secretary of transportation:

“The Notice to Airmen system is deeply outdated and showing serious cracks. Over the last few years, we’ve seen multiple system outages ground regional air travel, create extensive delays, and otherwise ruin the flying experience for the American people. It’s time our technology enters the 21st century.”

Does that hint that they're changing "Air Missions" back to "Airmen"?

GENOT 7930.114 of 10 Feb 2025, "Effective immediately, the term Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) is being changed to Notice to Airmen (NOTAM), and the title of FAA Order 7930.2 is being changed to 'Notice to Airmen (NOTAM).'"

Nauga,
who has been noticed

This one has been up for 6 years. And will be up for another 975 more. If only I knew what it meant.

They have all Notam's running on one PC, with a 2nd backup that is never tested and never seems to work.

This upgrade will move it to the cloud, cost 4x the price, where they will run the exact same software on one system and have 3 backups that are never tested or functional.

I see you've played knifey spoony before.

guessing: Non-standard Tricolor Light (vasi) does not work, never will work

Yup, my guess too. One of like 25 airports with a tricolor vasi. And I can confirm it doesnt work.

Interestingly, it doesn't show up on the FAA site, but it does show up on Foreflight.

Pretty obvious, isn't it? The NSTD TRIL is out of service until the next millennium. Why's that so hard?
;)

“Improvement” Yeah, yeah, yeah:rolleyes:. Right after the release of MOSAIC.

Many, many years ago I got a succinct NOTAM evaluation from a senior CFI when I told him NOTAMS were a disorganized mish-mash of barely comprehensible babbling: "Son, NOTAMS aren't meant to inform YOU; they're meant to CYA others.

Are they still using cassette tape drives to record data?

Ahh brings back memories of having to hit record about the time the beeps came in from my 56 buad modem on my Atari CPU

You mean they finally came up with a 3 letter code that means 'birds in vicinity of airport'?

Well that IS good news.

100% this. The system is chock full of NOTAMs that only serve as CYA for the issuing authority. Airport has a sign that is not lit, issue a NOTAM, now the liability is on the pilot and not the airport. Tower light out, issue NOTAM, again liability. Pilot has 200 NOTAMs to not only review but sit down and interpret and plot on a map for a 50 mile 45 minute flight, not my problem. Heaven forbid they miss a critical runway or airport closure NOTAM buried in the noise.

Note, this is coming from someone who has literally issued 1,000's of NOTAMs in my career.

This is one of the things I really like about Garmin Pilot. They have some sort of presumably automatic process to parse NOTAMs and then display them in a manner that is easily comprehensible and obvious to the pilot, such as runway closure NOTAMs that display the actual runway in yellow for upcoming closures and red during the closure period. Better to fix the underlying problem, for sure, but I like that GP (and FF more recently, I believe) is showing this stuff directly on the map.

When we switched over to using NOTAM Manager to issue NOTAMS 10+ years ago, the entire concept was to be able to provide graphical NOTAMs automatically. I believe that functionality is still built into the program, but it has not been approved or widely used. Imagine if the Airport Diagram was a living document that could easily and automatically updated to reflect closures. Unfortunately I think it is easier said than done. Every airport is different and must be manually created in the system, then the program has to learn how to connect various surfaces at each airport to reflect the closure NOTAMs, which can be quite complex by themselves. Might be a good use of AI, if it could be trusted to be correct and maintain the expected integrity NOTAMs should have. Remember the FAA doesn't accept failure...

They sometimes don't accept success.
