Left KVVS this morning and landed KBKL. What a beautiful airport. So cool to land right down town. Very reminiscent of Meigs on MSFS back in the day.

Unfortunately signature has the fbo, so you can pay $30 "handling fee" or buy $8.98 avgas. Rumor is there might be some free city-owned parking, but i didn't pursue it.

USS Cod is literally right next door. We walked over and crawled all around it. Easily the best museum ship I've been on. It's self guided, so you can spend as much time as you want geeking out. Beautifully preserved and interpreted. I've been on the German u-boat at the museum of science & industry in Chicago, and they run you through it in about 15min. I spent 1.5 hours here. Also fascinating to see how much bigger the American boats were. Like 2x. I could stand upright throughout the boat. Double the crew. Four (4!) 1600hp v-16 engines.

After that we took a slightly smelly Uber to ride the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad, which runs through Cuyahoga Valley NP. It was fun, but the scenery was just so-so.

Another smelly Uber back to burke, and we blasted off for home. Lots of storms about, so we got direct Kalamazoo and skirted everything to the north. Flew over Kelly's Island and cedar point. Talked to Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and Detroit. All were more accommodating than Chicago ;)

My hometown, go Browns!

From what I remember, city parking is at the terminal building just west of the big FBO hangar.

Sisters new bf works C90. We've had a chat about the brutality.

Cool trip. Got picked up from kbkl once when I went to trade school in Cleveland.

You didn't run into Paul? Cod is on my "to visit" list, but I'd definitely want to meet Paul Farace while I'm there. He's been doing an amazing job telling stories about Cod and other fleet subs on Cod's Youtube channel.

I've seen a couple of those; I'll probably go watch more of them now. I'm a big fan of the Battlehip New Jersey channel. I need to get out there one of these days.

As far as I could tell, the only person there from the museum was the kid selling tickets.

City parking (right under the tower, on the east end of the terminal building) was $7 a night in fall 2024. If there’s a game at the stadium across the road the streets get all goofed up with closures, we found it was faster to walk to/from the hotel than wait for an Uber.

I had heard that the city is trying to close Burke Lakefront down. It would truely be a shame as it is easy access to the Cleveland downtown, and various attractions like the Rock n Roll Hall of fame, and various brew houses.

That one has always been on the list, hit the RR HoF, book a hotel walkable from the airport, spend a few days downtown. Time to move it up on the list.

I agree, Paul has done an amazing job on Cod. Because Cod went pretty much straight from being a reserve fleet boat to being a museum, it survived almost entirely intact. Still, the crew there has done a lot of work into the little bits of accuracy that make the boat look like the crew just stepped away and will be back in a minute.

If you want to see what a WW-II submarine looks like, Cod is THE choice.

This is my favorite of the commandments. It applies to nearly every field.

Doing all the academic studying in the world might give you an appreciation for the principles and theory of operation, but god dam* it is not even a small substitute for knowing how things work in the real world and understanding what you should expect in the course of normal operation.

Small correction... that should be 'thy theories,' not 'thine.' 'Thy' and 'Thine' work like 'A' and 'An.'

Burke Lakefront, love flying in there! My last two landings there have been in a 737-800 doing MLB sportsball charters… fun stuff.
The Blue Jays were boarding their Air Canada (insert Airbus model here) as we were departing, having just soundly whipped the Indians Guardians 9-0. They had to literally walk around our plane to get to it from the busses lol.

Hiw does it compare to the Pampanito in San Fran?
1) Cod 100% original, it was never modified to be more visitor friendly. Entry is via a ladder, like God intended submariners to enter a boat.
2) Better kept. The preservation and presentation for Cod is museum quality. It isn't just the boat, it's everything from cathodic protection to authentic paint colors and clothing. The boat looks like it's ready to go to sea and the crew just stepped out for a minute.
3) no plastic barriers

Pampanito was towed as the underway boat for Down Periscope. The Hollywood people never repainted it properly and it shows.
