Hello,
I am new on this forum.
I have an issue with my radio MAC 1700 that I have used for a while. Lately, the volume randomly cut off, I had to power on/off to fix it. But now it happens more often and has become a big issue for flying.
I saw an old discussion where a member Ted said he had the exact same issue with his MAC 1700, but I was not allowed to interact with that post for some reason. Not sure if he can see this post, just curious to know how he fixed it if ever he did something.

BTW, I am not ready to upgrade the whole com system now. Any suggestions if the MAC 1700 can be repaired or any other model that can slide in the same cage? I have just bought another used MAC 1700 from someone who just updated his avionics as I need something else to fly. But I don’t truly trust this model anymore, I have heard about the TKM MX 170C that could be a good alternative.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thx.

As I recall, a MAC1700 is a KX170 that's been modified with a different front display/buttons.

@Ted stop wrenching on the Cobra, the white courtesy phone is for you.

Yes it is. The manufacturer McCoy Avionics made it to adapt to the KX170 series. They have been out of business since that has made the repair more challenging with parts. The front display is digital with standby frequency. It is great combination when it works.

Oh by the way, TKM went out of business a few years ago.

I had two and loved them. I’m pretty sure I had one repaired a good while ago by JA Air. Maybe give them a call and see what they say

Thanks. JA Air has stopped supporting this model. They referred me to another company that had stopped as well. I have found a company called RC Avionics in Minnesota that is willing to take a look. Just trying to see if anyone here knows someone who has already repaired this model in the past.

Try twisting the volume control back forth a dozen times or so. Sometimes the wiper inside the volume potentiometer loses conductivity and by working it back and forth, it will clean itself. The MAC 1700 is a solid nav/com.

Definitely nothing wrong with keeping this radio going. As mentioned, it's a King KX170 with a new digital tuner and faceplate with flip-flop and memory functionality. As radios go, it's really a good one.

Skycom Avionics has an excellent component-level repair guy that might be able to help. He's done some great repairs on a few different things for me.

Thank you. I will give it a try. But this is an intermittent issue that makes the assessment very challenging.

Wanted to drop an update just in case someone needs a good avionic shop.
Forgot to update right away but I could get my MAC 1700 repaired or cleaned with new front display switched from my backup one. It has been working great since (knock on the wood). The place is located in Minnesota

Ask for Gene, he is very patient and knows his stuff in Radios.

They charged me less than $500 including the inspection and swapping the front panel from my second MAC 1700 that I refused to repair as it required more work.
