Light sport envelope expansion proposed at last

The FAA has proposed eliminating the weight limit for light sport aircraft, though there are a few catches.

Not a very good summary. Sorry.

The limitation is stall speed (54 knots CAS clean), there is NO limit on gross. You won't find any 250knot 3000 pound aircraft that meet the stall speed requirements. Cessna 172 is on the edge of the performance requirements.

The 250 knots is a limitation for aircraft certification, not Sport Pilot privileges.

4 seats 1 passenger, night VFR, controlable pitch, retractable gear are allowed as you note (with training / endorsement.

Quickly scanning through the document but it looks pretty good so far. Increasing weight limits to 3,000lbs, speeds to 250 knots, constant speed propellers and retractable gear. Certification standards between EAB and certificated standard category. Support for IFR...
