Well I haven’t seen a thread on this yet so here it is. The last of the Apollo 8 boys has passed on. “Houston…we have a problem.”

Gemini 7
Gemini 12
Apollo 8
Apollo 13

This man did 10 laps around the moon, with one hand on the steering wheel.

He always had good stories to tell at the various Apollo reunions.
Always humble and friendly, he even refused to wear an Admiral's rank in the Apollo 13 movie, insisting on wearing his actual rank of Captain and his own Navy uniform.

Oh man. What a shame.

I actually just watched Apollo 13:Survival on Netflix on Wednesday night. Some really great footage that I had never seen before. Well worth the watch.

First To The Moon is an excellent documentary on Apollo 8.

Jim Lovell mostly grew up in Milwaukee, and went to Wisconsin for a couple of years - 7th street in downtown Milwaukee was renamed James Lovell St. years ago, and there are other things locally bearing his name as well.

When I was a lineman in college, he would still fly his Baron in to attend the BPPP events we hosted. Even an astronaut can benefit from recurrent training as a GA pilot!
