So, a bunch of guys from the flight school and I were shooting the breeze at the bar the other night, and one of the students INSISTED that he could fly the flight school 172 through the big
hangar (I think he was trying to use the "I'm a pilot" bit to impress this blond (a closing time 7)). Well, one thing led to another...

I was in the right seat, but I don't have a medical (I guess we should have used my LSA, but our thinking was a bit loose at the time and there wouldn't have been room for everybody) but otherwise I am a current private pilot, the post-solo student was in the left seat (he has not yet done the night instruction), and an instructor was passed out in the back. Our A&P was in the hangar with a camera (he was the one that was supposed to open the doors). I'm not sure what happened to the blond. I'm pretty sure we remembered to turn the strobes and transponder on before we crossed the hold short line. One big mistake was we forgot to turn the second radio to 121.5. There was no A.O.A installed.

We almost made it.

In any case, the NTSB guy had a fit. We suggested that an accident re-construction would be in order, and I offered to buy the first dozen rounds, but that just made things worse. Go figure. Could it be that the student didn't get the phone number for the blond so the NTSB couldn't get her statement? Or was it that we weren't monitoring guard? They ask so many questions - like this whole thing was some kind of big deal or something. And, like, we are supposed to remember all this?

But the real question is: Who logs the flight?

Whomever Bagged the blond was clearly the PIC.... Not too hard to figure that one. Everyone else can claim Wingman hours though.

A better question though......... Who "took one for the team" with the well fed brunette that was more than happy to buy shots for you guys? Sac? Eman? 6PC?

That's easy. All three with certificates.

The student was receiving valuable instruction, including reasonable distractions (the blonde) and emergency procedures (dealing with an unconscious passenger) from the CFI in the back. So the student logs dual received and the CFI PIC.

You, of course, as the only conscious certificated pilot comes under the famous Beane Chief Counsel letter. If you recall, the (unverifiable but possibly real) letter talks about how the only rated pilot on board may log PIC when acting as PIC. As the only conscious rated pilot on board, you were necessarily PIC and I think the FAA would definitely extend Beane to cover the situation so you could log PIC.

Heck, it would probably be part of the revocation order.

Who cares as y'all got drunk and had fun. Isn't that the point of drinking with friends anyway?

Here's how Maule did it back in the day. Notice they OPENED the hangar door.

When this occurred, the USAF was using Spence Field (where Maule is located) as an auxiliary field for T38s from Moody AFB. One of the IPs was working the RSU and witnessed it, who I later met in the mid 80s.

Of that over blown drainage ditch they land floats in, what the factory lacks in size, they make up for in balls!

Did that covering lady work there when you went, she's got that shopping cart for her supplies and all the burned out irons going around her work station?

Last time I was at the Maule factory was back in the mid to late 80s, when one of my idiot students (passed his PPC) bought a M35 I think. I advised against it and tried to get him to buy a C182. He had a few incidents w/ the Maule after I washed my hands of him trying to check him out in the Maule. I was up to 14 hours training him in the Maule and he was no where close when he got ****ed at me and went his way. Guess he felt he was ready to fly his Maule on his own, which he wasn't as evidenced by his incidents with it.

Anyway, I met a few of the Maules, and Dan Spader (think that was his name) took us up for a demo ride. Later he jumped into the turbine Maule they were fooling with and took off on the ramp. Don't know if I met her though, if she was even there in the 80s.

I've heard that to get that photo there's a 4x4 lying horizontally across the hangar back there in the dark, which allowed them to bounce the aircraft into the air a little early. Still an impressive feat, however it got aloft.

I saw "logging question" and opened the thread expecting to see big machinery and lumberjacks. Well, not so much the lumberjacks, just the big machinery.

Imagine my disappointment... :)

Here, cheer up Nate!

The blonde gets to log it as the sole manipulator of the pilot in command.
