Hey y'all,

I'm thinking about flying to KACY just to see what it's like in Class C airspace. I know there's a $10 landing fee, but I see Landmark charges for parking. Ideally, I just want to land real quick and taxi to the ramp to "park" (and maybe pee) so I would need to get a departure clearance. However, I'd rather avoid paying Landmark a parking fee - especially if I don't pee and I just stop for a second.

Do you guys think I'd have to pay the parking fee if I got out to pee? Or if I didn't get out to pee? I realize this is a silly question, but it's been bugging me. I could probably just call Landmark but this is a lot easier for my lazy mood.

Pete

Usually there is a minimum fuel purchase to negate the ramp fees.

A buck will get you $50 that if you TOUCH their ramp area, you will be billed. Or buy gas.

Yeah, if you get out and pee on the ramp they might have you charged with indecent exposure. prob'ly cheaper to just go to the mens room and pay the parking fee?

Hey.. It is New Jersey...... It all smells the same...;)

How would they know he even peed ..??:dunno:

They charged our flight school student $40 and all he did was run in for bathroom and back out. Ouch

Call them and ask how much it is to pee at their facility.

I might just be carrying a Gatorade bottle... I might be a pilot, but it doesn't mean I'm not cheap.

Call them and ask how much it is to pee at their facility.

Hahaha that actually is kind of a funny question to ask them. Kinda like trolling them in a sense haha.

I reckon, though, from where I'm flying I might need to buy some fuel. Plus, it's reimbursable from where I rent. Granted, I should check fuel prices before I go.

Are we really complaining about a $10 fee?

Not complaining about the $10 landing fee. That's inevitable. I'm not even complaining about the parking fee. Just trying to sidestep it if at all possible because I'm cheap.

tl;dr: No, we are not.

I avioded one by accident

Flew into Kthinkstherefboisworth$25 to land. I was picking up an Angel Flight. When I arrived I was told by the desk that the patient was to sick too travel. Then they said because I wasn't completing the angel flight I owed them $25...whatever. She asked my tail number and I inadvertently gave her the tail number of a 182 I just traded instead of my new plane. I used the bathroom and there was a line line at the desk on the way back so I just left. I have received bills form airports before. I thought they can spend the .50 to bill me. Bill never came didn't dawn on me til much later why. Not recommending it, but worked for me.

Unless you touch n go, or buy the minimum required fuel, expect to pay... But don't let that deter you. You are a pilot -and it's only money :) :) yaeh right.

When I first got my PPL I did many trips into the Orlando / Tampa Bravo as well as landed at as many towered fields as I could - just to get used to it. Little busier than Charlie airpsace but whatever

Typically, such FBO's charge three fees -- ramp, handling, and parking. If all you do is pull up, unload, reload, and go (and I think your planned event would qualify as that), they charge only the ramp fee. If they provide any service at all, they charge the handling fee, but that is typically waived with some minimum fuel purchase. If you leave the plane more than some amount of time (ranging from one hour to overnight), they charge the parking fee. Where there is no handling fee, they typically waive the first night's parking fee for that minimum fuel purchase. Since this all varies some between FBO's, best way to learn what they'll charge is to call ahead.

An alternative approach is don't call, don't ask, don't wonder. Walk in, smile, say hi, be nice, do what you need, ask for help if required, smile, pack up and leave.

I do this whenever and wherever I travel. More often than not, I get few if any of the charges. If I park overnight, I pay parking. I usually get fuel everywhere I go because I like full tanks and am rarely grossed up, that generally takes care of ramp/handling fees for a day. I never opt for a hangar but can't tell you how many times I've been moved in by the line because there was space or they were 'worried'. (I really need to get a hangar sometimes when big storms are forecast - resolution for new year).

Don't get the impression I'm some slick fast talker - not the case. Ask me, you get my truth. I am usually unable to deceive or lie. Just not in me. Oh, forgot to mention that my wife is so nice and friendly I'm often just floating along in here reflected cheer.)

Flying tailwheel at bigger airports showed me how invisible I could be. They can't tow me so I have to park it. They can't tow me out so I have to go get it and I learned to just fly out from there. You'd be surprised how the towing by line people is where the fee transactions get driven from. Be extra nice to line people!

In a recent thread I mentioned that I've been using RDU for years - dropping and picking up passengers, eating & working at Crosswinds Cafe while plane watching, dropping in when I needed an approach to get home to my grass strip 10 miles away. Buying a sectional or two back in the day. Over 15 years I had never been charged a dime and never bought a drop of fuel by either FBO - Landmark, Tac Air ne Southern Jet - afterall my home tank is 10 miles away. It's not that anyone there knows me - I don't go often enough. I've borrowed a crew car once. Had line guys drive me to the terminal to pickup or drop off a passenger - always a $Fiver to the driver. However, the very last time I flew in there a month or two ago to pickup my wife, someone behind the desk ashamedly told me that they would need to charge me the ramp fee. I smiled and tried to make it easy which made it harder for the 3 women to do it but they did. Record broken!

I only call ahead somewhere to find out if they have Hertz and to reserve a car. I never ask about charges, I always ask for help with whatever. The few airports that have baggage handlers and if the baggage handlers are deployed to my little plane I tip them, but not the line guys.

There are a few airports where they always apply the charges consistently no matter what. The only one that comes to mind right now is Fayetteville NC - must be the military background. Miami - they don't know what to make of a little puddle jumper picking up a passenger - just too busy. Too busy often applies at really busy airport FBOs.

The wonderful team at Charlotte's Wilson Air Center - they do know us. They didn't care for the taildragger being dropped off at the front door and told me about it after the 5th time I did it, but now it's all red carpet, smiles and one memorable time - football tickets. I always buy the reasonably priced gas and pay to park.

I usually use KAGC in Pittsburgh - the place I learned to fly - but had the need to use KPIT a few times. I guess they don't get much casual pleasure traffic and kind of botched things by ignoring me. Thereafter they spent my visits offering discounts, extra help and extra courtesy. Thank you and I'm sorry about my ELT going off on the ramp!

This approach isn't for everyone. If you are choosing airports based on fees, calling ahead will clear things up and give you ammo for uncalled for extras. I fly to get somewhere specific and tend to pick the closest most convenient airport. The worse that can happen is being charged everything they would have charged if I called ahead but frankly it's usually better than that and if you need extra help you will often be extra surprised.

Be really nice when you walk in, smile, buy a few gallons of fuel, and that is all you'll likely get billed for. Remember, all fees are optional and all prices negotiable, and that includes fuel prices. I can't recall paying advertised price at the big high price jet centers, and can't remember the last time I paid for any ramp/handling except going in a hangar. A lot of it depends on your personality, don't be shy about asking if there is any way to get a better price, I find begging to be highly effective.:D Another thing I do if I'm making a lunch stop is I'll ask if anybody wants me to pick them up something on my way. Even if nobody takes me up on it, it's good karma come billing time that I see in applied discounts I never asked for. Rescue dogs see discounts as well in some places.

So far I think I've only once stopped at a place with fees. I took the time to talk with the line guy and the lady behind the counter, and bought some fuel (and I think I even did what Henning suggested - offer to bring back lunch for anyone that wanted me to pick them up something). I doubt I met any kind of minimum fuel purchase, but I didn't get charged anything extra. While I was there I saw another guy come through, act like he owned the place, wasn't courteous to anyone, and got hit with a fee. Don't be that guy.

Flew there a couple years ago and parked to quickly use the restroom. If I remember correctly, I paid $40 for a Cessna 150. $15 handling fee, $15 security fee, and $10 landing fee.

I'll bet the pit boss at any casino can get you comped for 4 hrs of play.;)

That is about the lowest form of scummery I've heard for any FBO. I would have immediately called for the CEO of the FBO and the lead for your Angel Flight operation and tell them both that a little discussion about policies was in order.

Now, I do hope that you would have communicated with the Angel Flight passenger before you left to assure that they were still up to the flight that morning.

That's just crazy. Would they have still charged the fee if your passenger arrived, but unexpectedly expired in their lobby?

Whether the passenger showed up or not, it was still an Angel Flight.

Naw I just get on with life. The Angel Flight people were really apologetic, the kid was really sick. I ended up flying them around about two months later, worked out fine. I texted the passengers but I didn't get a response until too late. I got to fly so there is the positive!

I would have gone to jail in that situation. The desk girl literally did not care, but that is why she was working a desk and I was flying.

Sad, was there a manager available? It would be rare that a successful FBO that would not have a manager that would want to correct their employee on this, but sadly, they do exist. Usually those FBOs aren't successful for long though.

You would be amazed at how many people pull the "angel flight" trick out of their bag to escape fees....:mad2::mad2::mad2:...

True, but it shouldn't matter. Other people's ethics shouldn't influence your own.

You know me.. I Play by the rules and pay my way.....

But... To see people get off a G-5 with a borrowed pair of crutches and hobble over to their Range Rover to beat the fees is downright sickening...

And... it happens ALOT too...:mad2::mad2:

The "kill 'em with kindness" guy (too lazy to quote) seems to have a good premise. I might just as well land and do what I need to do. If I get charged, well, I get charged. I could also just call and ask ahead of time just to see what happens. Judging by the guy with the 150 who posted earlier, though, it looks like I'm going to end up $40 poorer from KACY if I decide to land and pee.

Doesn't matter, karma pays better when you don't let them bring you down too.
