KHIO (Oregon): Attempted skyjack of R-22

Idjit.

The day I soloed another idjit tried to hijack a 172 at my airport. I had to wait for the airport to reopen after the cops put a lot of extra holes in the guy. He robbed a bank, took hostages, drove to the airport, then tried to open the door of a 172 with a student and CFI doing a runup before an XC. He actually survived, sort of, and was charged with everything from attempted air piracy to littering (probably). I did my 3 solo flights while the news crews were there for their 5pm broadcast. That shot the news crews set up so the runway can be seen over the reporter's shoulder got me some air time, I was that plane flying in the background during those shots.

At least they don't have to spend the money to prosecute and incarcerate this moron.

So the whole town got to critique your landings!

I was shooting landings shortly after I bought my Sport Cub, when one of the Portland TV stations showed up to do a story about the efforts to rid our airport of Canada Geese. I had three landings and a brief interview on the evening news.

I have stayed at the hotel where the suspect was shot.

I have stayed at the hotel where the suspect was shot.

I stayed there last Tuesday night. I bet they tighten up ramp access there as there are two different ways in without much checking to get to the transient tie-downs (which are in pretty terrible shape).

I wonder if the hotel has bullet holes in it now.

Ignorant people, more and more. My cousin used to flight instruct at Hillsboro. Now with Trans States flying the Jungle Jet.

I wonder if the hijacker had a pilots license?

He picked a poor aircraft to jack. Of all the flying machines I've flown, the R22 is by far the hardest to just hop in and go! If I'm standing at the helicopter at gun point I'd say here let me crank that for you, just pull this lever on your side all the way up and push this stick forward, you're good to go.

Just let Darwin and the Insurance company handle the rest.

So that WE don't waste money to prosecute and incarcerate this moron. It comes out of OUR pockets. Cops don't print money. We give it to them. Voluntarily. :)
You are correct. My use of the third-person plural was in reference to the good taxpayers of the State of Oregon, of which I am no longer one. But obviously federal resources would have come into play in this case in a big way.

Something else you want to charge him with?

When a person looks at a witness and then puts a hood on, climbs the fence and tries to hijack someone in broad daylight do you think that is normal?

No, just that flying without a licence is probably the smallest of his offenses. At least it should be.

Well, this is Portland ...

He might as well tried to hijack a unicycle. . .he would have gotten farther.

Funny you should mention ...

This is why it's necessary to get off this planet now and then. . .
