I can't believe how lucky I am to live and fly in a place so beautiful...

I took this picture this evening, as we approached the airport from the NE. Those are two of the car ferries that service the island, chugging across the channel 1000' below.

I've spent plenty of time on the gulf coast and never thought of it as beautiful, but that is indeed a nice view!

Nice picture, Jay. I'll have to share that with my wife. I recognize a lot of it from our visit to your place last year (the marina, the park, the ferries, the restaurants, ...).

We sat in our car, front of the line, waiting for one of those ferries. We got to watch a couple of bottle-nosed dolphins splashing around in front of us. Another night, we were in a restaurant on the marina and something, I never did figure out what it was, was in the water right next to where we were sitting.

I've flown VFR all over the country, and there is nothing prettier than flying along the chain of islands off the coast of Texas.

Well, okay, flying over the Grand Canyon was more breathtaking, but I like my chances of surviving an engine failure more here...

If we can ever get the 210 different steps involved with changing our name completed, we are planning putting together a fly-in this winter. Stay tuned.

I'll definitely keep it in mind. Depending on our own family schedule, we might be ready for a break out of town.

That's not your rainy season, is it?

Well...okay...I suppose from the air I would agree with you - most of my time has been on ships in Galveston, Freeport, Corpus/Ingleside area...etc. I remember being in Freeport, TX loading grain, looking around and thinking the place must have looked beautiful about a hundred years ago, but all the refineries, tank farms and houses on stilts just made it look.....depressing.

The Hill Country is still the most beautiful part of Texas though....

Appreciating being alive and always looking for beauty in our world. Thanks Jay, you reminded me why I fly. :D

I don't know. It has barely ever rained since the last time you were here!

The Hill Country is fun to visit (we're heading to New Braunfels for Wurstfest next weekend) -- but I'm not sure I'd consider it beautiful.

I have to admit, it didn't take me long to notice the difference in CAVU in the midwest as opposed to down here in the south. Go flying on a clear day on the back-side of a cold front in Iowa, and if you squint you can almost see the rockies. Fly on a "CAVU" day down here and you can almost see the end of the wingtip. ;)

Out here off the coast, CAVU is really CAVU, just like up North.

I've noticed that if there is crappy/fuzzy visibility down here, it's usually a few miles inland from the Gulf itself.

Oh, it's pretty just about anywhere you can fly. I loved flying up the Mississippi River in Iowa, and along Lake Michigan in Wisconsin.

Even flying over the ugliest big cities is fun, because all that ground-level ugliness is invisible from 1,000'. Heck, even Detroit looks nice from the air.
