An interesting article in Kitplanes I just read today...a nice story about two strangers meeting at some airshow and after some chit chat found out that one had flown the other's plane some time before. Got me to thinking.... I have a list of the aircraft I've flown. Mostly old ones, so likely have changed hands a few times, and rentals so a lot of pilots have flown them... I wonder if any of you are now the proud owners...or have otherwise had the opportunity to fly any of them.... sort of a "degrees of Kevin Bacon" thing I suppose.... This came up about one of the planes on my list a couple years ago.... maybe it won't, but I just thought it may turn out to be interesting. Many of you probably have a list too long to post or even know, but post yours if you want!
This could be a fun thread! I haven’t flown it, but I recognize N54448. It used to be a trainer at Superior Flight School in Kennesaw. Where did you fly it?
This is fun. I see a172 that is one S/N off of one in which I did a bunch of training for my private and IR. Geek out!
I have flown two of the airplanes on your list, N704XA and N12573. At the time (late 1990s) both were rentals at Pearson Field, Vancouver WA.
I’ll bite. Nothing on your list but I’m more middle based. Perhaps some of the Midwest folks have flown these. I have 25 tail numbers, in order by most type hours: C172 - N1242U - N12442 - N12657 - N1590V - N172SS - N20095 - N20437 - N2122M - N2441D - N4397Q - N5367H - N738HA - N7669G - N8398L - N9622Q P28R - N8414C - N5094S DA40 - N171SF P32R - N549WS S22T - N910SG DA42 - N985JA J3 - N32530 - N41301 C170 - N4165V C182 - N304DB
Rented from a school at RYY back in April 1999, I don't recognize the name Superior Flight School...but don't recall what it was called then. Looks like I only flew it one time. Mostly rented a pair of 172RG's they had.... No Cool, and thanks for the pictures! That's where I rented them...was there on business trips and went up for some of my more memorable flights in them. Only one dual fun flight each N12573 was May 1996, a nice lap around Mt St Helens on an unusually clear and beautiful day. N704XA was April 1997, a nice flight up the Columbia River Gorge up to about the dam if I recall correctly.
In 1999, you would have been renting from Atlanta Northside. N54448 moved to the Superior fleet when they opened in 2021 along with some of the others on your list. I have a lot of time in that airplane. I also flew the two 172RG’s and N9139C, the 182RG. I didn’t check them all, but i may have a couple of others on your list. N54448 was based at RYY since brand new in 1981, but finally left the field when it was sold two years ago.
Okay I kind of want to build a database where we can all enter the tail numbers of every plane we've flown and write a program to list the matches....
YES, Northside Aviation! Thank you!! I was only there in Kennesaw about 10 months, but was taking that time to knock the rust off after a rusty period by working towards my Commercial rating. Sadly never finished it because my job situation had me relocate again back down to Florida....and I got rusty again. Anyway, my last flight out of RYY was a dual in that 182RG.... kind of a farewell flight so she (my CFII) suggested we do a approach for the "option" at Dobbins. We had the wheels sucked up and the throttle wide open...that 'low pass' felt fast to us but it was not lost on me that to the folks in the tower we probably looked like we were walking..... I wish that I'd have kept some of the receipts or information from Northside.... I've tried to remember what I paid for those rentals several times, because rental rates in my new city were much higher...seemed like something changed in the industry about that time and rental rates started outpacing inflation big time.... I've seen how that database shares aircraft info but I have not seen where it lets you connect with other pilots that have flown it, how many others, etc... So yeah, unless I missed something about myflightbook, I think your database would be cool, @SixPapaCharlie ! A few years back I spent some time over several evenings while watching TV or whatever, entering my logbook into a spreadsheet so that I could get all these meaningless but interesting statistics and knowledge. It was great for reminiscing! Later I learned about myflightbook and entered my stuff there. It was interesting when the database kicked back some info I didn't have about some of the aircraft, photos and such....
Does it connect socially to other pilots (or better yet, PoA) who have flown that same airframe? Like a Facebook friend request?
I doubt I'll find any overlap with the few I've flown. N512PG Aeronca 7AC N79501 Cessna C-172 H N5380N Cessna C-182 Q N15321 Piper PA-28-140 N459FL Piper PA-28-140 N5533F Piper PA-28-140 N6842J Piper PA-28-140 N9TA Piper PA-28-140 N698FL Piper PA-28-160 N55826 Piper PA-28-180 N48ZG Vans RV-12 N980KM Vans RV-12
It does tell you how many other users have used that aircraft and the total number of flights, but no user data is shared. I have 52 different tails in my logbook. A while back while bored I decided to look some of them up to see what ever became of them. I was surprised to see several were crashed, damaged by storms, or exported from the US.
I understand all the reasons why, but myflightbook says one other user has flown my plane and I would just love to send them a message about it. It was owned by the State of Illinois for most of it's life and it'd be cool to know its story. They took incredible care of it.
Highlighted ones I have some time in. Also, 2553Y- PA28-161 The one that I got my PPL in 6026E- Bo K35 53AF- 172 8059R- Pa28-181
Awesome! So with time in 8HA and 14C, we've run in very similar circles as these are both club planes.
My point about My Flight Book is there is already a large crowd sourced database. Whether Eric would write us something to use it or not would be up to him.
not exactly...I found one hole in this idea.... N2260P was an Apache PA-23-150 when I flew it. When I entered it into myflightbook, it came up with larger engines...apparently somebody put larger engines in it at some point...180HP it seems....so the myflightbook developer set up a second aircraft with the same tail number for me. The N2260P in my flightbook database has me as the only user, but I know that's not the case for the airframe.... I've often thought that I would love to have that old aircraft but with much larger engines. Large, stable, and comfortable airframe for sure. I sure do hope they were able to do it while keeping the round nose and round tail. I don't like the look of the geronimo STC. That sure would be a nice plane now, if they fixed the leaking fuel bladders and the door! (and spruced up the interior/avionics)
Here is my list. N1115U C-172 M N1954T PA-28 N35683 C-172 I N40ER C-172 N N4141L C-172 G N46203 C-172 I N469CT CT-SW N5208W PA-28-150 N5400J C-172 N N5414L AA-5 N5452D C-172 N N5904U PA-28-140 N6315M C-152U N6585L C-152 N68204 C-172 N N7524R PA-28-140 N93124 C-152
Someone needs to set this up as a website to upload all the N numbers than spit out a list of ones others have flown that you have flown. And allow updates
Jeff Do you by chance have any idea what year N12573 was manufactured? It really does not matter, just that I hate having holes in my data.... interesting that the FAA database leaves that out of so many...and I couldn't find it in another database I'd found online either.
My past tail numbers include: N2172W - currently identifies as a 182 but was a 172 when I flew it. Maybe the 172 crashed N25053 - a 152 that is now registered in Florida (was in Texas when I flew it) N2667Q - a cherokee 140 that I don't think is active anymore N28024 - Boeing Stearman owned by Tim Preston in Winter Haven N6595H - Piper Cub - also Tim's N343AT - a 172 that seems to have been exported to Denmark N44960 - a Piper Archer that I did most of my training in the second time around; my instructor closed shop 7 years ago and this plane seems to have ended up in New York N561SP - a 172SP that got repossessed from the flight school at KADS; it is now registered in Maryland N576SP - another 172SP that got repossessed from the flight school; it is now registered in San Diego, CA N618SP - these SP's really got the flight school bankrupt ; it is now registered in Iowa; maybe I should go find it; I think I had 1 flight in it I mainly stuck to.... N9635H - the 172 I mostly used during my first round of training; it was the cheapest on the flight line; it is now in Arizona N84699 - my first owned airplane; a 1982 Piper Archer that now belongs to a flying club in Kentucky
Wow - this comment just brought back a flood of memories. Early/Mid 80’s, flying with my Dad out of RYY. No intercom in those days. He’s descending for what I thought was landing on 9 at RYY, but the mountain was on the wrong side of the plane. What the heck is going on? As we cross the threshold, two F-15’s were holding short. Dad puts the throttle to the wall and climbs out and heads over to RYY with me wondering if the ‘old guy’ (remember when early 40’s seemed old?) was losing his mind. After we land, he explained that they would give you the approach for option if not too busy. Have not thought about that in forever. Thanks for bringing it back!
