Ok, just got the word today. I'm not as eloquent as our mechanic, so I'll use his words:
Anyways - problem solved. Now we need a new DG and she'll be good as new!
The carburetor attachment bolts had come loose, loose enough that there was a tiny gap between the carburetor and the engine, allowing air leakage and messing up the mixture.
