I went and looked at a plane that I am seriously considering. However in the door jamb I saw what looks to be putty but not really sure. There is no damage history with this plane and was wondering what this might be or signify?

Sure looks like Bondo in those photos. Looks like a crack in one of them

Someone's try at stopping the air leaks.

yeah the one by the hinge looks like there might be cracks in the frame but cant tell. Is this cause for alarm??

Depends on what is underneath the crappy globs of putty. If I were looking at the airplane I wouldn't make any assumptions.

Yep, I suspect Tom is right and they are chasing leaks, but I'd want to be sure before plopping down money to buy the thing

The seller did mention no leaks that he knows of..... But he also hangars it.

Oy, I hate seeing stuff like that. Considering the market, it would have to have a lot of stuff going for it for me to accept that. That's a really poor way of dealing with leaks if that's what was going on there, and who knows what is beneath?

What you forgot to mention is that darn near every jet in existance has at least some putty in the door frame in the seal area.

That makes it just fine because someone does it to a jet? The real issue here is we don't know why it's been done or what lies beneath.

For me it's certainly cause for concern, I'd want to dig it out to see what's underneath.
You'd start digging with out any thought of damaging the aircraft you don't own? WTF

I said 'want' if the owner isn't good with that, I'd walk. If I'm going to 'damage the aircraft' by digging out putty that isn't supposed to be there, there are repairs that are necessary.

I'd ask the owner why the putty is there, and see if there's an entry in the maintenance log. If it's not well documented, I'd assume nothing -- good or bad -- but probably would shy away from buying the plane until the mystery is solved.

The overall look of that putty does not inspire in me a feeling of confidence that the job, whatever it was, was done in a professional manner. If the metal underneath was not properly prepped, you could very well have corrosion that has developed underneath the putty. If it's just there to stop air leaks, then it should be no problem for the owner to remove it to make sure there is no corrosion or cracking to the metal underneath. Putty is cheap, quick and easy to replace, especially since it's not painted over.

Right.. First start with just asking about it and see where it goes. If you want to see underneath it, just ask! Maybe yes, maybe no!
