Is this pilot a jerk?

That's just very wrong. I do hope he gets a phone call for badgering ATC that way and getting in the way.

I've seen people get away with worse. His attitude sure won't help, and hopefully he'll get violated. My concern is less the route vs. assigned than how he was badgering the controller while being wrong.

that is so true. i often get comments while driving such as "hey, nice odometer"

Wait until he finds out that he is the guy the other pilots are laughing at.
 
They wouldn't put the D-> on the GPS if they didn't mean for you to use it.
